Need help backing up my hard drive with Norton Utilities

Post by Dallas4lr »

Greetings,

I have a G3 B&W 350 running OS9.2.2, the 6Gig fireball drive is about to crap out on me. What I would like to do is use norton utilities 6.0 to back all the info and OS on the fireball to my 36Gig SCSI drive, and then install an new hard drive in the G3 and copy the backed up info to the new drive.

The SCSI drive is connected to the G3 via an ATTO SCSI card, and the SCSI drive only has one partition.

Is this possible, and would someone mine walking me thru this process in a detailed manner.

Thanks Dallas

Why don't you use:

Apple's DiskUtility and create a disk image,

or use

Carbon Copy Clooner ( I have had excellent success with this one )

or use

Super Duper.

Sorry I don't have the time to get the urls however just go to www.versiontracker.com and do a search request, read the user's comments, and download those.

I would not use NORTON.

Hmmm,

Super Duper and Carbon copy cloner are only available for OSX. Hmmm, I could really use some help on this.

Switch to OS X Panther 3.9. Might not be what you wanted to hear, but Huge improvement everywhere and compatibility with other 3rd parties for you.

Ops, sorry buddy.

I thought/assummed you were running OS X but working with saving a OS 9 hard drive.

It has been a long time since I worked with NORTON and can't really recall that it had the ability to copy/save an entire hard drive, 6 GB.

If you could install one of those three cats ( the Jag, Panther, or Tiger ) the cloning of a hard drive really can be done in no time.

The last time I tried to clone a hard drive in OS 9 it seems that Apple's DiskUtility in 9 had a 2GB limit.

Now if your Mac has a firewire/usb you could just buy an external usb/firewire drive. They are really cheap these days. ( Well, I guess it depends on personal finance as to what is cheap.

Or if your mac has room install an extra internal hard drive. Take a look at the specs for your mac.

Thanks,

I do appreciate all of your comments but:

My 6 gig fireball is failing!!!!! So it has to go!!!! So I need to replace the system drive. Any option would require me to transfer my current data to any new drive whether IDE/USB/firewire and I'm just trying to find an easy way to do this in OS9.

Moving to OSX would be to expensive for me at this time, I would have to make numerous hardware and software purchases just get back to where I am. OSX is definitely out of the question!!!

Please any other suggestions would be appreciated, I'm quite sure there was a way to backup your drives during the days of OS9.

Believe you me I fully understand the shortage of $$$ to do things with computers.

In 9 and prior there was a 2 GB limit with hard drives transfering/creating disk images using Apple'sDiskCopyUtilities.

If you don't have a friend that can tinker with removing and installing hard drives you could consider a visit to a local PC/MAC repair shop and ask them to do that for you.

My local PC/MAC repair shop can do that at a drop of hat and there rates are certainly not what you would pay at an AppleRetailDealer.

In fact I've given up completely on going to the AppleRetailDealer because their prices are just outrageous and I have found them to be somewhat less then honest in providing service.

My local PC/MAC guys charge less then $25.00 bucks an hour and then on some jobs they just quote a price.

You may get a better deal if you purchase the new hard drive thru them.

I sure would like to know how you make out because it is heart breaking to lose the data you've worked hard to build. Applications and such are replaceable by re-installing but audio recording etc are memories when lost .

Just another thought, you could buy a used ( of course ) zip drive ( those are super cheap these days ). However they are mainly found in those PC/MAC repair shops usually in a scrap bin at the back end of the shop. Those guys rarely get rid of anything.

Midiw,

My G3 B&W has a zip drive, I could definitely just copy some folders over to the zip drive, but I have a few pieces of software that are no longer available on my current drive. How do you copy applications to a zip and then back to a new drive and maintain functionality.

Two, what is the largest zip cartriage that I can use??

Three, I may just have to prune back to 2 Gigs and do the backup. Dumping stuff to zip and adding them back on to the new drive later. But I've looked at Disk Utility and I can't seem to find the backup function or menu.

Thanks

Check in AppleSystemProfiler to see what your zip drive size could handle. I think the largest zip cart/drive was 2 gig.

As I reflect upon your delema I am wondering if you would not be better off in purchasing a firewire/usb external drive. The cost of those depends largly on the size of drive they can put into them. Also that would give you an external drive in addition to the internal drives your Mac has. Storage space is a must with audio/video projects and today that storage space is very afforable.

Here go to a used PC/MAC store and swing a deal with them or go to one of those big box electronics stores. Since those drives are firewire/usb they can be used on both platforms. Don't bother getting those name brand big price drives. That market is a huge rip off.

Hmmm,

I have a Rorke 4bay SCSI tower that I save all my audio files on. I just need to replace the internal 6 gig fireball.

I've already purchased a 30 gig 7200/66 Maxtor drive. So I just need info on setting up Apple Disk Utility for backing up 2 gigs to SCSI or ZIP, and how to restore this back to the new drive.

Use DiskCopy which is part of the Utilities package in OS 9 and prior.

It's mac intuitive so you drag drop a file onto DiskCopy or double click DiskCopy and follow the road it takes you down.

You could also just create a folder on one of those storage disks and drag the data ( files ) from the dying disk to that folder. Remember, just drag over in small packages because the Finder in OS 9 can only handle 2 GB at a time. You will also note when you try this method it takes a long long time for the Finder to memorize 2GB of data so that it can copy of the same amount of data. However I am sure you are familiar with that process.

Since you have so much data storage personally I would be inclined to go with both methods and create two copies just for greater certainty.

Also note that if you have any programmes that required authorization those will be lost in the process. Nothing anyone can do about that. It is just the nature of those authorization programmes. Otherwise it would be easy to pirate the software by burning a copy and giving it away.

If you are interested and finally set up I could pass on the resource files for StudioVisionPro ( MIDI/audio sequencer ) from OPCODE. They went under years ago however us die hard users still use the programme because it is every bit as good as the current crop of programmes in OS X and it has some features lacking in today's MIDI/audio programmes. Or you have already have that programme.

Thanks,

I use to use Vision so I will be willing to give Studio vision a try.

So I guess I can transfer application folders using disk utility.

Thanks, I will get started as soon as the drive arrives and I will keep you posted.

You can use both ( not at the same time ) Drag/Drop from the dying HD to the new HD or DiskCopy.

I would be inclined to use both and that way have 2 back ups just for greater certainty. Strange things can happen to those ones and zeros.

Good luck.

6 GB of data is a h...lll of a lot of data to transfer. Don't be surprised if you get some glitches in the doing that process because that is the nature of OS 9 and prior. In OS X the DiskUtility allows you to "image" those huge drives albeit it takes a long time. I tried it once on about an 80GB drive and it took about half a day. Mind you at that time I had a slow cpu G4 Mac.

Just let me know when you are ready and I will provide you with SVPro. I will use www.yousendit.com .

midiw,

Everything went great, I used disk copy and copied every folder to my SCSI drive by drag and drop. Installed new maxtor 30gig/66 drive, initialized two partitions - and copied everything back.

I have to reenter a few authorizations, and a few programs simply dont work. But all in all I'm happy!!!

Right on my friend!

Now let's get back to making music and remember to stay happy! ( Who wrote that song? )

Ah, did you still want StudioVisionPro for OS 9?
