FMR RNP & what vocal mic?

Post by grunter »

Has anyone been using the FMR RNP preamp to record vocals? If so, what mics have you been using? I will be recording male vocals in a home studio setting. I'm tying to keep the mic cost below $500 street price.

Some mic choices I've been considering: StudioProjects C1 & Rode NTK

Those are good choices, given your price constraints.

The exception: If your singer's going to be singing or yelling at high volume (i.e., punk or metal stuff) -- in which case a dynamic mic like an SM58 would work better.

I'm also considering the Rode NT1-A. Any opinions on this mic?

It really depends on the singer.

I use the SP C1 often for male lead vocals.

I often use the MXL67 for vocals that are too bright on the C1.

I had fantastic success the other day with the MXL69 (tube) on one female lead voice.

One of my singers does best through my Shure SM7B (used by Michael Jackson as vocal mic on the Thriller album).

If I had to get just one for male lead vocals, I'd probably get the C1. For around $300 street, I'd get the C1 and the MXL67 to cover two different ranges.

I often use the two together, with the 67 for the background singer(s) so they don't fight with the lead vocal.

You should also look into a AT4050. They are awesome all purpose mics, great for vocals and a whole host of other tasks. (Guitar, OH's, room mics, etc)

You will always be be pleased with the result you get from it, you won't have any buyer regret and you could sell it tomorrow for what you paid for it.

I own an NT1, a C1 nice, but limited.

Yup, the 4050 is the way to go. You can get one for just under $500 and it is extremely versatile and sounds great. This is one you'll hang on to for the long haul. It doesn't sound "cheap" or "home project-like"

I will second on the SM7. Great mic. Low output but really great vocal mic. I use it on vocals constantly. No one sounds bad on it.

I have to add another vote for the 4050. Despite it's price, this is a mic used in even the biggest studios. Not 2nd rate in any way. Very detailed and the mids are extremely open (which will be important for a male singer). I use this mic for just about everything. It is my favorite for stringed instruments too (it's killer on mandolin & dreadnaught sized guitars).

I like the 4050 so much that I actually have 3 of them. I'v never had anyone not like they way they sound through it.

Just my $.02 - in the end you have to like what you buy.

The NT-1A has won awards, and it a whole lot of mic for the buck.

Do you have any other information about what you are looking for besides just "male"?

Is it rock? metal? ballads?

Do you want a lot of proximity effect? Does the singer have problems with plosives?

Sorry for the delay in responding. My primary genre is adult contemporary, soft rock, ballads, etc.

i've been using the studio projects C-1 and the RNP for about a year. i think they make a great a pair for most vocal applications. i also liked the using the mk 319 and the rnp for acoustic guitar.
