Question about insert effects presets

Post by jjhp3 »

Hello Learned Ones

I'm a long time DP user with a question about DP7.1 and insert effects. Here's the situation which brought up the question: stereo audio track with sound file; in mixer add guitar preset "cry me baby more" - good so far. I then decide to put that preset on an aux chl so I can fade in the effects... but when I look at the presets for the aux chl, they are considerably different in choice, with no "cry me baby more" shown. Workaround is to copy from audio trk to aux, but this seems awkward. I tried to load the effect preset from the default folder, but oddly to me, "cry me baby more" wasn't in any folder of effects I could find.

Question: why don't all audio-possible tracks have the same suite of insert effects? Master is different than audio is different than aux.

Thanks!

More "Learned Ones" will probably reply, but is it possible (I'm not in front of DP right now) that a plugin might be mono only and therefore would not appear as available to a stereo aux or master track?

Just guessing...

I noticed this too, but haven't had time to figure it out. Being a former Pro Tools TDM user, where what you can load on an Aux track is definitely different than what you can put on an audio track, I jumped to the conclusion that DP's doing the same thing for some technical reason, and rather than question it, I came up with a workaround like you did. Maybe I should look into it a bit more though, instead of projecting one of PT's old problems onto DP......

.

Why bother with presets?

They can be useful for other things, but for what you are trying to do, using them seems awkward.

Just Option-command drag the source plug in (form your track) into a spot in your inserts in the target track (your aux track).

This will work as long as both tracks are the same (mono, stereo).

Total time to do this: 1 second or less.

Good suggestions... I found the presets in the Lib/AppSupport/MOTU/ MAS presets and there are indeed, folders for each "kind" of tracks...

My reason for asking is not that I want to use a MOTU preset repetitively, I was thinking more that I might create my own groups of effect inserts, save them as a preset- and reuse. So if one saves one's audio track's inserts preset, can it be used on an aux? Or, actually, where would one save the custom preset to access it from any track?

I have to dig my car out of the snow now, but will test these questions asap and post results if anyone is interested-

You can also use one of my DP favorites: Clippings.

You can either, save the entire audio track (along with its plug-ins), or you can just save a plug-in setting (or an entire chain) and they will be there for you in any project whenever you need them (if you made the clipping global).

Try them. They are fantastic.

Re: Question about insert effects presets

Clipping window is an excellent suggestion and solves my dilemma - thanks. However a philosophical question remains for me... why are there separate folders for different selections of plugins? I, like an earlier respondent, use ProTools on occasion and I haven't run across a signal processing plugin that requires or excludes a particular alignment of insert effects.

As an experiment, I made a random selection of plugins on a audio track and saved it as "John's hadron distortion group" into the folder of MAS presets mentioned above. I then tried to "load" my preset onto (into?) an aux track and while the file window appeared to send it off to my aux track, it in fact, never showed up on the aux. Huh. Anybody have an insight??

Thanks again to those who've replied to my question,

John

(another quickie: do all effects come in / default as 50% mix? Anyway to change this to a 100% wet default?)
