Best way to handle headphone bus

Post by strikingtwice »

Hi all. Using dp 5,6,or7 and an 896hd. I am trying to find a way to leave my monitors on but just switch something out to send only to phones. I've tried switching to master out phones 1-2, but it still comes out of the speakers, despite all of the channels being bussed to the main out, or are all of those instruments still going to the main out regardless of there being a master channel?

I just want an easy way to switch to phones for recording, but i'm screwing something up.

Thanks!!

When you switch the Phones assignment on Audio Setup, it will only mirror the output you assign, as you have found out. Here's what I would do:

1. In MOTU Audio Setup, change the Phones assignment back to Phones 1-2.
2. In DP go to the Bundles window (shift-U or Studio > Bundles), and add a Phones 1-2 output under Main out 1-2.
3. When you want to change the output of your mix to phones, select all of the tracks (or the tracks you want) and go to Audio Assignments (opt-a or Studio > Audio Assignments), and you can change the output of all of the selected tracks to Phones 1-2. Check the box to include your master fader.

To go back, select the tracks again, and change the outputs back in audio assignments.

I don't think that's the only way to skin this cat, but that's the way I'd go.

Good luck!

This is dependent on your audio I/O card.

I guess you are using a MOTU interface and referring to the outputs exposed on whichever MOTU interface you own, vs. a third-party interface or the internal computer audio?

Not all interfaces have dedicated Mains or Phones in the output section.

Yes, I was referring specifically to the 896HD, since the OP refers to it. I have the same interface, so I mentioned the both the MOTU driver and what to do in DP.

Sorry; the use of lower-case in the original message caused me to scan it incorrectly and see those numbers as tracks vs. a model number. Sometimes my visual problems are worse than others, so I apologise for the redundancy.
