used iBook G4.good deal?
Hi:
I have a chance to et a used iBook G4 for $300.I'm not all that savvy with the Mac laptops, but I'm wondering if I can run Leopard or Snow Leopard on it.I would like to use the MacBook in a live situations to control VI's or possibly Reason 4 and DP6 or 7.
It's a friends, and she's not sure of the specs......
Thanks in advance,
Tony

If I recall correctly, as long as the clock speed is 900 mhz or higher and you have at least one gig of RAM installed, Leopard will work on the iBook G4. I currently run Leopard on my wife's 933 iBook G4, but it takes forever to start up or open applications.
Snow Leo is a no-go on all but Intel Macs, which the G4 is not.
You have to do the price research, but remember latops tend to get beat up in normal use, so a warranty would be a nice thing to have. My daughter's iBook G4 motherboard died a little over a year ago. My wife's doesn't charge batteries anymore, so we use my daughter's dead iBook to handle battery chores and swap out batteries. Which reminds: if the iBook you are considering has the original battery, it is almost certainly on its last legs.

Thanks for the tips. I did a little research and saw the iBook is Power PC. I am going to say that the person that owns it probably has Tiger. My main thing is do I throw $300 on this or save it towards the MacBook of my choice, which I know will handle everything I'm trying to throw at it?

The exact Ram size and CPU speed would be a good information.
I would not intend to get any serious music job done with that setup though.
When it comes to software, you'll have to face little to no support at all.
A 3 years old white Intel MacBook is a different story.

No, I wouldn't pay that for that. It's not really good for much besides general purpose computing, and even for that, it's likely on its last legs. Laptops, even Macs, are usually only good for five or so years on average. I'd walk on by.
Mac Pro 2X2.8 GHz 8 Core, Macbook Pro 2.16 GHz Core 2 Duo, 2 GB's of RAM. Logic Pro 8. Digital Performer 5.13. Pro Tools M-Powered 7.4. Ableton Live 5. Focusrite Sapphire Pro 10 I/O interface.
