LIVE Recordings

Post by Swervin »

So iv been searchin around for a company that rents out motu. Im recording a live gig and as of right now im runnin an 896 and 896 HD linked up via fw. I totally struck out with anyone within 400 miles of my location having anything to rent, but within my searches i came across a gentleman who informed me that any motu combination over 24 ch is a bust. He said if they are chained by fw the 32 chan. that i was hopin to run will not even be close to stable enough to record. I wanted to say that my rig has been unstable ever sinnce i linked my 2 896s up but i felt it was better left unsaid.lol So my ? is .... does this hold water. can i not run another 16 ch via fw without havin an extream amount of unstability?

I do 32 track live recordings regularly and have done since the original MOTU 828's became available. I used to safely record 24 tracks at 24 bit 48k on a Powerbook G4. 3x 828's on the built in fire wire bus and external hard drive on a PCMCIA firewire card. I once did a 40 track recording with the same setup and hired an Apogee AD16 all at 16 bit 44.1k mind you.

I now use a G5 with an extra firewire card, an 828 on the card an 8 pre on the built in fw. 8 channels of adat from an Apogee AD16 each going to a motu interface giving me 32 solid tracks into Digital performer! Neat!

MOTU 828 mkIII, 828 mkI x3, 8Pre ][ Apogee AD16, DA16 & Duet ][ MC Mix ][ API 3124+ ][ Toft ATB 24

This kind of stuff has been covered over and over in the MOTU Hardware and Mac OS section of the forum.

If you read that it seems like the whole world is out of sync, which may have something to do with people's clocking issues now that I think of it.

aThere must be answers to be had somewhere in there. Should be a simple thing you're trying to do but you know how difficult simple things can be sometimes.

Good luck,
