Total newbie!

Post by JDM »

Hi all,

I am really interested in DP6. I will be totally new to computer recording. I own an Akai DPS24 that I absolutely love and will never get rid of, but I think it is time for me to learn computer based DAW's and DP6 seems, at least to me, the way to go. (I will also be able to use both the Akai and DP6 somewhat..... plugs, editing etc..) I own DP5, it came with my laptop G4, but I have never used it. Anyway, I will most definitely need a new computer. Which of these would you recommend? Maybe there is something better? Any suggestions would be great! I really can't afford much more than $1300 and I really have no idea what I need. I won't be using many plugs, at least not for awhile.

The nice thing about the Quad is it is PCIe, so if ever you move into the Intel World and a MacPro, your cards stand at least a fair chance of working on your new machine. The biggest advantage over the Mini is probably expandability... you can add an eSATA card and add a bunch of HDs, which come in handy if you get a few VI's going. The Quad will drive two monitors if you want, too.

I've got a Quad G5, and it works really nicely for DP. I am running under Tiger (OS 10.4.11)for my work with DP, Leopard for my non-music stuff.

Thanks for the replies guys! I kind of figured the G5 was he way to go. How is that for a price of a refurbished unit?($1222) Should I trust a refurbished computer?

Thanks again,

My instinct says it depends on who did the work. But it's pretty hard to kill these things if you have an inkling of what you're doing. For all the complexity, the basic elements are pretty simple to replace.

Thanks. People don't always remember me, but they always remember my company name. :)

I'm a tad worried about you MIDI... you are looking frightfully thin as of late.

I wish! I mean I try to loose weight, but it just keeps getting more and more difficult. And all I've had is just one thin mint... just one thin min...

:D I guess it is somehow poetic when one not only plays the piano, but is also buried in it.

DP will run better (more efficiently) on an Intel machine. Even that Mini.

G5 Gives you the expansion cards option.

Plan your usage and make the determination
DP 6.02
Quad 3.0 Ghz, 8.0 GB RAM, 2 - 1TB HD, 5 - 500GB HD's (RAID)
MOTU HD192, 2408mk3, Microlite, UAD-1, UAD-2, Powercore, Lavry Blue AD/DA convertor, LA-610
Euphonix MC Control

29 years in this business and counting.....Loving every minute of it.....

Thanks! I am still looking. I might just save a bit longer and get a new intel MAC.
