Can old G3 iBooks run in "clamshell" mode?

Post by James Steele »

I ask this because I have an old G3 iBook with a busted screen, but in combination with an external monitor and external keyboard would be ideal to press into service as a permanent "overdubbing control station" in my studio room where I track my vocals. I use my G4 iBook normally via VnC to control my DAW machine which is in another room. It would just look nicer with the whole business is if I could somehow set the G3 iBook to have the screen off and run closed up. I could then just set the monitor on top of it.

Anybody know?

PS, this machine has been kind of beat with the broken screen and all, so I'm not above modifying the sensor or something so that the computer thinks it's still open, etc.

If I understand you, you want to prevent the machine from 'sleeping' with the lid closed?

There is a small magnet in most laptops (and I assume the iBook) that lets the computer know the lid is closed. You'll probably need to disassemble the case and remove the magnet - or perhaps it's a switch?

I'll find out - brb... :)

You'll have to read thru a few of the suggested repairs to see when they mention the magnet. I've taken apart a few white iBooks to a pretty good result. Shouldn't be too tough.
