In case there are some people wondering if their UltraLite-mk3 is faulty or not, because of that loud popping noise heard when rotating the input trims,
here´s what Motu tech support answered:
"This is a normal behavior for the Ultralite Mk3"
and:
"The Trim knobs move in 1 dB increments. Because this is a large increase in volume it is normal to hear a noise when you increase the input level. "
So don´t touch the trims, or you will get those nasty "pops" in your recordings.
Use external mic preamp or mixer if trimming is needed while recording.
It took me over 2 months to get this information from Motu, and before that my ULmk3 was replaced by local distributor, as they concluded that my unit was faulty because of this popping. They are now informed that it is not a fault but a feature.
However, I think that Motu should remove the following text from their product page for ULmk3, it is just misleading information:
"The gain adjustment itself is smooth because it is analog ---"
Also I will ask them to add a TechNote about this issue, it hopefully saves somebody from posting TechLinks to Motu (and waiting for a response for weeks) or replacing a device that is just working normally.
This issue is also discussed more detailed in MOTU Hardware & Mac OSX -forum.
It would be interesting to know, if 828´s are also having input trim noise...?
UltraLite-mk3 Input Trim popping is normal!
