Where does DP6 get this info?

Post by soniq2 »

In the Tracks window, if I select the OUTPUT column, I'm presented with a list of devices that, I'm assuming are taken from Audio MIDI setup. If I then click the DEFAULT PATCH column, I'm presented with a list of the names of patches defined for that device that I've selected for that OUTPUT.

Where do these patch names come from (where are they defined)? If they are defined by what I've chosen in Audio MIDI Setup, then where does Audio MIDI Setup get them? Are they in a file somewhere? :?

Thanks

I'm on my iPod so I cannot give great detail, but the data is in a 'midnam' file as I recall. It is editable using the cherrypicker app. I believe the factory names are in the MIDI driver files from MOTU but perhaps are in the Apple CoreMIDI info.

You can find Cherrypicker at versiontracker.com

Kind regards.

Thanks MIDI and Dave :)

I guess my confusion exists when I began to peruse the Library/Audio/MIDI Devices folder.

In DP6, if I choose, for example in my case, SQ-2-1 (Ensoniq SQ-2 Channel 1), and then click on the DEFAULT PATCH column, I'm accurately presented with all of the available patches for my Ensoniq device, namely the SQ-2.

However, when I navigate to the Library/Audio/MIDI Devices/MOTU/Ensoniq folder, I see the definition for the SQ-2 in the XML file "Ensoniq.middev" (which is used by Audio MIDI Setup), but there is no midnam file named SQ-2.midnam anywhere.

Hense, my confusion. If there does not seem to be an SQ-2.midnam file, but DP6 is able to present to me the correct patches for this device when I click on the DEFAULT PATCH column, where then is DP6 getting this information for this device?

Ideas?

Thanks so much everyone for any help you may provide. :)

P.S. I've downloaded and tried CherryPicker and am still trying it out. Thanks.. :)

Ok,

I think I'm beginning to understand this whole thing a little better. :D

After a little file-peeking, it appears that the definitions for the Ensoniq devices are nested in that there are several device definitions contained in one file that is not necessarily named for the devices they define. In this case SQ-1.midnam defines several devices, including SQ-2.

Thanks all again for your help.

You got it. You can also get an editor/librarian such as Unisyn from MOTU and customize patches and file names.

Thanks again MIDI,

I've never heard of Unisyn before. How does this app differ from CherryPicker?

Thanks

There is a Unisyn forum on this board. Unisyn edits and keeps a database of hardware synth patches, but only if there is a profile of that synth included with the app. A list of included synth profiles is available form MOTU. CherryPicker only edits the .midnam files.

I would recommend you check out the comments on Unisyn on that board before buying. It has a lot of problems and seems to be dead in the water as far as any kind of continued development is concerned.

Good luck.
