Why oh why oh why does MOTU not post release notes? I ran a software company for 23 years, and I would have fired my release staff in a heartbeat if they'd done that.

Has anybody found any feature upgrades (better return routing? work with my AlphaTrack?) or just the one bug fix that's been noted?

I dunno. I guess there's a lot of people at MOTU that are thankful right now you're not their boss. :)

Re: Defect Isolated, Workaround Identified

Post by williamm »

I've finally isolated at least one cause of 828 Classic dropouts and lockups with AudioDesk 2.11 and FireWire 1.4.9, on Intel MacBook Pro OSX 10.4.11. I don't mind telling you it took me a very long time to figure this out, but it seems that my lockups were all occurring while background processing tasks were running in AudioDesk, typically after stopping a long take of 10 minutes or more, then resuming recording. When I disable background processing the lockups go away, when I re-enable background processing lockups return. I've never had 828 lockups with my old G4 Cube, so this defect and workaround may be specific to Intel Macs, or perhaps even specific to Intel MacBook Pro's. After a lockup, I always find a line like this in system.log:

Nov 14 20:57:25 WilliamSonic kernel[0]: /SourceCache/AppleFWOHCI/AppleFWOHCI-2910.4.0/AppleFWOHCI.cpp 3506:
ERROR: FireWire (OHCI) TI ID 8025 built-in: handleUnrecoverableErrorInt

I've submitted this in a TechLink to MOTU as "MTL 25159 — Dropouts on Intel Macbook Pro". Obviously, there should be no connection between 828 communications and background processing, so this should be easy for MOTU to fix. If they actually do fix it, I'll post a note here. Meanwhile, check out MOTU's new web site http://www.motu.com/. WOW!

Re: MOTU FireWire-1.4.20 Doesn't Fix This Issue

Post by williamm »

I finally got around to installing MOTU FireWire Update 1.4.20, and found that my 828 Classic still locks up during background processing in AudioDesk 2.11 on my Intel MacBook Pro.

williamm, I am having the same problem with an 8pre / AudioDesk 2.11 with Universal Audio Install 1.4.20 and my MBP (OSX 10.5.6). I'm also having the added issue that my computer isn't even recognizing the 8pre when its connecting, which is further fueling my disappointment in MOTU, and making me wish I would've never bought this 8pre. Bad experience with what I thought was going to be a superior product.

Hi all,
i have the 828 mk2 firewire model and i tried with the driver versions 1.4.0 , 1.4.9 , 1.4.20 , but nothing.
The audio MIDI setup see my motu, the system prefernce see the motu too, but when i play a song or anything with music i have problems. The window of the iTunes will be closed like all the windows where i play the music (for ex. Youtube, when i play a video the motu close the youtube window).
Is the first time that i see this problem with a motu. For exact i have an Intel iMac whit Mac OS X 10.5.6 , is anybody else with the same studio setup so to say me which driver version i should to use?

UPDATE:

MOTU Support did a great job working with me on this issue. I sent my unit back to them, and they've replaced it with a perfectly functioning new one. I've spent the past two nights working with it, no dropouts, great sound that I was expecting when I bought my original unit, couldn't be happier. Thank you MOTU Support!

I've a motu 828MK3 and it looks a little similiar to the problems above. It's not recognized by audio MIDI setup, but i can do a firmware upgrade to the interface. Also, when i connect my hdd to the other firewire port of the interface, ive connection to the hdd. So the firewire port isnt broken. I guess it is something in OSX 10.5.6 cause on this forum this update gives a lot of trouble. Does anybody know if there's something i can do (except sending back to motu, that's my last option!).

Same problem as gijsdelouw.
Firewire firmware update ok, device recognized by the OS, but no success having motu audio setup aware of the device.
I made a ticket in MOTU support tracker, hope I will get an answer.
