It's the ability to control levels with or without the computer on that appeals to me. I've pretty much given up on finding an in line mixer. Maybe I'll immerse the Alesis studio 24 in a bath of pure alcohol.monkey man wrote: Funny, Baysey, some time back I went the route Brad's just suggested - the 24I/O. I'd also recommend the Mackie Onyx 1620 - the pres are very good and you can take direct, post-gain outs from all 16 channels (although 8 of them are stereo). I simply feed my first 8 mono channels to the 24I/O, thus benefitting from the ability to control input levels nicely.

Re: In Line Mixers
Unless you're willing to spend some big bucks on a nice analog desk---then maybe a digital console is the way to go since you have the 2408.
Thank you,

Yes, there are a lot of ways I can go here. I've had the same basic setup up for about 20 years. Time to get out a clean sheet of paper and draw it out again.BradLyons wrote:Unless you're willing to spend some big bucks on a nice analog desk---then maybe a digital console is the way to go since you have the 2408.

Re: In Line Mixers
Depending ur economics.. Budgets: used Mackie 24-8 or 32-8 mixers are all "In Line" mixers. 8 buss but also "direct out".
FWIW I´d stay away from the Behringers....
Other studodesks that are ment to be a part of the recording chain, (that does not mean FH/LIVE desks) almost always are "InLine" desks.

These Mackies have direct out, but they don't have a monitor input "in line" with the line input and direct out you can use for the eight DAW playback channels corresponding to the eight direct outs, meaning that you would need to use channels 9-16 to mix the playback. The Alesis Studio 24, for example, has all three in the first 8 channels.Radiogal wrote:Depending ur economics.. Re: In Line Mixers
These Mackies, the 32-8 and the 24-8, ARE in fact true "In line mixers", with input channel and mix channel fader/knob on the same channelstrip!!!!! 24(32) channels, 48 (64) during mixdown, 8 buss and direct out on each channel.bayswater wrote:These Mackies have direct out, but they don't have a monitor input "in line" with the line input and direct out you can use for the eight DAW playback channels corresponding to the eight direct outs, meaning that you would need to use channels 9-16 to mix the playback. Still it depends on the mixingdesks design where the "direct out" is taken from. On my AMEK Big 44 (a true Inline studio console) the "direct out" is taken after the mic/line preamp on the input channel (not the mix channel), that seems to be most common as I found this to be true on most of the big consoles I worked with during the years.
Some desks might give the option to FLIP the input/mix chain and/or faders. The Mackies have a Flip Channel function.
Unsure if this affect the "direct out" signal chain, but you can check it out in the desks Block Diagram.
But "In line" means that each channelstrip has an input channel and a mix return channel and they can be used simultaniously during mixdown.

OK. Thanks. I'll have another look for these.Radiogal wrote: These Mackies, the 32-8 and the 24-8, ARE in fact true "In line mixers", with input channel and mix channel fader/knob on the same channelstrip!!!!! 24(32) channels, 48 (64) during mixdown, 8 buss and direct out on each channel.
