Ultralite Mk3 outs?

Post by jericho »

We picked up an UltraLite mk3 to use as a live recording input and mixer. We're having trouble figuring out the routing in CueMix FX.

We plugged mics and devices into several of the analog inputs, set up levels on the Inputs tab, and then dialed in a mix on the Mixes tab. We're using Mix 1, and we can see fader changes and mutes reflected in the meters for Bus 1 and the MIX 1 meter in the mixes section of the Meters tab. After some initial problems with the analog inputs all going directly to the Main Outs we got it so that only Bus 1 was assigned to the Main Outs. All good.

So when I try to record from the UltraLite Mk3 into an application on my Mac, why do I see the unmodified analog inputs? I can mute all the channels in Mix 1 so that the Main Output meters are lifeless in CueMix, but I still see the unattenuated signal from the analog inputs in my DAW. (In this case, Soundtrack Pro and/or Garageband)

In the attached image you can see that the mic attached to input 2 has a big signal. It's panned center on Bus 1, the main outputs show Bus 1's signal, but Soundtrack is recording the analog inputs directly.

Can I have the output of the mixer sent to my DAW?

thanks much, any help would be appreciated,

The mixes in CueMix FX operate independently of the DAW you're using (except under special circumstances with Digital Performer and AudioDesk). So what you're seeing is normal.

Yes, using the Return 1-2 input that is published by the ULmk3 driver to the DAW application, you can route audio from one selected output pair into an audio track. This feature is explained on page 32 of the ULmk3 manual for Mac.
The leading cause of wrong answers is asking the wrong questions.

Hey folks,

Not to resurrect a months-dead topic, but wanted to give an update. The whole issue ended up being within the application I was using called "Nicecast" (shoutcast/icecast client) I needed to set the inputs to 'channels 11 and 12'. Apparently THOSE within that particular app were the stereo return channels. None of the channels were labeled or listed (the MOTU manual warns this can happen).

I have to say, in terms of application writing, this was REALLY non-intuitive, but certainly not MOTU's fault. Ultralite seems to be working like a charm now, able to have two mics on the phantom power jacks, and two additional laptops using two more stereo ins.

Thanks for the help and reference, the chart on page 32 was a lot of help as well, to see a listing of the whole channels and helped narrow things down.
