MIDI Doesn't Work On Every Restart...

Post by rainmaker »

I don't record a whole lot of MIDI in DP 5.13, but when I do I have noticed a couple issues I'm hoping to solve.

First, every time I record MIDI into DP and turn on the click for timing reference, any plugins on the master fader delay the click because of the plugins latency. So the only way to avoid the click being late off the grid is to delete any plugs on the master fader. Is there any way to have plugs on the master fader without delaying the click?

Second, every time I startup my MacPro and run DP, MIDI doesn't work. More specifically, I have to go into the Mac OS X Audio MIDI Setup program there I will see that Audio MIDI has deleted all the connections from my devices to my Motu MTP-AV (the little virtual cables you connect your devices with) and a second new MTP-AV Interface icon shows up with the number 2 appended to the name. So then I have to delete one of the MTP-AV icons and reconnect my devices to the right ports using the virtual cable connections. I have to do this EVERY time I restart the computer! Why does this happen and how do I keep Audio MIDI Setup remembering my connections?

Thanks for the help from any MIDI gurus,
Rainmaker

This seems a little obvious, so you may have actually already tried it, but ... have you tried just bypassing the effects on the master fader until you finish recording your MIDI tracks? You can also route your click in the Click Preferences to a different set of outputs than the ones you're using as your main outputs.

I can't remember how the MTP works. Is it self-powered (meaning, is it something connected to an adapter or power cord) or is it powered by the USB bus? If it's self-powered, try turning it on before turning on your Mac Pro, so that it's recognized on startup. It almost sounds to me, if it's a self-powered device, that it's causing your AudioMIDI Setup to rescan the busses when you turn it on and view it as a "new" MTP. You may also want to make sure you have the latest USB MIDI drivers from MOTU.

.

This happened to me some time ago. The fix for me was: replace the MTP's battery. Always turn it on BEFORE you power up your computer.

This is happening to me also. Ever since I installed the lastest driver 1.4.20 from Motu. I have to go to Audio/MIDI setup everytime and connect my 828mkII to my Mackie Control and then click the console setup. I never had to do this before with the previous driver. I'm using a Mac Pro 8-Core and DP 5.13. It's gotta be the driver? No?

Are you talking about the MIDI driver or the 828mkII driver? I have a TC Konnekt 24D and two USB controllers and AudioMIDI in 10.4.11 so far hasn't dropped the ball (though when I was browsing through MIDI Setup last night to answer the above question, I noticed a couple of odd ghost TC Konnekts in my MIDI setup that weren't connected to anything, so I deleted them), so it may well be a MOTU driver issue. Doesn't the 828mkII driver control MIDI and audio? It could be a conflict if you have another MIDI driver and the 828's driver going simultaneously ...

Me, too! I opened a thread on this in the MOTU hardware forum. I went through a lot of troubleshooting steps and cycled back and forth through the 1.4.9 and 1.4.20 drivers 6 times and could reproduce the problem every time with the 1.4.20 package. I eventually reverted back to 1.4.9. I opened a (un-read) Tech Link on this last week.

Eeeek! This is one of the myriad of reasons I opted to go direct with USB controllers instead of relying on MIDI through my Fastlanes. However, I can't imagine MOTU would let their MIDI drivers go to pot for too long ... unless they're waiting to spring a revised driver on us around the same time they give us DP 6.02 ...

Where can I get the old drivers? Are they on the site still? (At work.)

I found them through VersionTracker.
