How To Avoid Crashes

Perhaps you all have discovered these things, but if not--

I always:

1. Reformat before updating OS or DP.

2. Log off before shutting down.

No, it's not a long list, but a good one, I think.

I hope others will put up their ideas on this.

Hello:
If you have a slower system, turn off the playback scubber (speaker icon). During edge edits and the like it overloads the buss and unexpectedly quits.

Actually, I have no free time. I spend all of my workday recording and have no time to spend on screw-ups in my system. I don't update so often that the thorough cleansing of the drive amounts to anything like the time I could waste jacking around with it trying to get it to work.

Well, what ever works for you of course. I'm guessing you don't have many plugs or VIs to re-authorize each time. For what it's worth I've never done either of those steps and don't have crashing problems. However, I do repair pemissions before and after any install of anything.

Could you tell me how to repair permissions and what is the reason to do so?
I have never done that before.
also, is it safe to trash any preferences? I hear people say to trah DP prefs sometimes when there is a problem. will they reload automatically when you re-boot?

Hi Don!

You start DiskTool in /Applications/Utilities-folder

You can only repair permissions on the bootdrive

Mac OS-X have a standard set of permissions on every file in the system. (for things to work properly)

For some reason many installers seem to mess up these permissions.

This can i worst case make programs stop working
or at least screw things up pretty bad.
( if you suddenly lost permissions to save files in a certain folder - perhaps you couldn't save your newly recorded audiofile - as an example)

Maybe those are valid points. I don't know. But I don't do either one, and I have no problems with DP.

I wonder how logging off would even affect, let alone benefit, DP stability.

That said, if it works for ya, gotta love it.

Sooshie is right about log offs.

External FW, scsi or USB drives can sometimes hang up a shutdown command.

Log offs seem to help somehow and they are faster but I don't know why.

I believe your permissions question has been answered. Trashing prefs when there's an application specific problem can help but figuring out which one to trash is tricky. In OS9 it was a simple matter but in OSX there seems to be multiple pref files for everything. I would imagine most of them would regenerate after trashing but I haven't had to do it enough to really advise you.

Ah Ha.... That explains it. I have that happen too & it's so annoying. Actually it happens to me if I edge edit during playback, you know like you've found a spot you need to edit during playback so you amke the edit-Ooops crash. But, ya know you'd think on a dual 1.25 G4 simples things like this wouldn't happen.

rather than have to re-authorize plugins it is nice to have a mirror of your drive before you update, so if the new update is screwing things up just switch to the other OS... yes it requires 2 HDs ;) but it is *the* way to go ;)
