OK - where can I hear this "Hallelujah tone" guitar sound of which you speak? You have piqued my curiosity.James Steele wrote:Yes, but what a sound it is. I don't want any of those other tones.SixStringGeek wrote:That's nice if you just need the one sound. I like these as I can cover all the tones in one box. With EL34's, 'natch.![]()

Re: METAL GUITAR SOUND
If you go to his site you can hear song snippets, Geekster.
James has also posted examples on the forum in the past of his tunes, as well as a snippet of the amp setup dry (I think).
Sorry, but I've no links for you so a search might be in order if you're keen. Of course, there's always a chance James will inflict his monster tone on us as it is Christmas and his avatar suggests it's his brief to give in a big way at this time.

Re: METAL GUITAR SOUND
I was just kind of being tongue-in-cheek about it, really and kidding around. Tone is really such a matter of personal taste and is largely subjective and I have nothing against any sort of amps. I play around at the good natured jabs between the "Marshall guys" and the "Mesa guys" etc. I've also never owned any boutique amps, so I can't comment on those either. I just could never afford a boutique amp in my formative years so I sought out and found the best thing I could afford in my budget. I have to say though that I'm definitely a "Marshall guy." I like that British crunch sort of sound. That's not to say either that I think everything released under the Marshall brand is great. Some of the newer Marshall stuff made with new manufacturing techniques and the use of PC boards, etc. just don't quite do it for me like the older heads.
Personally, I really love the late 70s JMP heads. I have two 100 watters and if I had the dough I'd hoard them as they're becoming quite pricey any more.
I wouldn't also necessarily hold up any of the stuff on my web site as any sort of tone Nirvana. I'm happy with it, but they're not final mixes and some of it was before I happened upon the right way to mic my amp so that I captured something close to what I heard when I was in the room with the amplifier. One of my favorite clips however where you can hear what I think is an example of a pretty good sound that I'm somewhat proud of is in this older thread...
http://www.motunation.com/forum/viewtop ... =3&t=18252
I was somewhat excited because I found that a Groove Tubes GT-66 tube mic I bought on Craigslist through my HV-3C preamp turned out to produce some results I was happy with. I had tried Audix i5, SM58, and an AKG 414 (with Audio Upgrades mod to a TL) and nothing really did it for me like the GT-66.
Any way, in the thread I mentioned I posted an example of me just goofing around just to try and convey the tone I was getting. I also broke rules by recording via wireless instead of using a guitar cord, and having a Rocktron Intellipitch (24 bit A>D and D>A) in the effects loop applying HUSH noise reduction... a not so purist approach.
But again, one man's ideal tone is not everybody's and I'm just a guy who grew up on AC/DC, Judas Priest, Scorpions, etc. and I just have a thing for that British/Marshall type tone.

Me too. It's kinda like Chevy/Ford rivalry. Pointless but entertaining. I like the tone you're getting - real ballsy. Not like a typical Marshall at all.James Steele wrote:I was just kind of being tongue-in-cheek about it, really and kidding around. Ha ha ha. Thanks for the chuckle, guys.
FWIW, in Australia it's a Ford/Holden thing as Holden is our Chevvy.

Re: METAL GUITAR SOUND
So I have been waiting almost a month for james to fedex me his setup, but alas he seems not to care about my dilema...
I have Vox Valvetronix VT30. Here is my solution. I basically laid the part down times with five different amp models from the vox. Then I bounced this down, duplicated that stereo track, pitched down the duplicated track 1 octave. Then proceeded to add the preamp plug to one of the original tracks (the numetal model I believe) and added a little more crunch. Mixe the whole bunch together and, well didn't recreate a marshall sound, but did get one bad ass thick nasty guitar tone. Very nice actually.

Creativity, some digital stuff and analogue things that go boom. crackle, bits of wood with strings on them that go twang
