Interruption problem with audio

Post by Mushka »

Hi! I have a Mac Pro Quad 2.6 and a Motu 828mkII and DP5.13, 5GB RAM

I am having a problem with the audio. It gets interrupted continuously. I thought it was a RAM problem (I only had 1 GB of RAM), but then I added 4GB more and the problem still happened.

The problem happens randomly and not only happens with DP but with all the audio (itunes, quicktime) in the computer when the 828 is the one handling the audio. If I use Core Audio and the speaker from the computer, it does not happen.

When I am watching video, the images continue to move without interruption but the audio stops. As a consequence, if I am recording, the part when the interruption happens does not get recorded as blank, it simply gets omitted, like if I had cut a part from the audio.

I tried updating the software, but, again, it did not solve the problem.

The only software changes that I did recently was the installation of Komplete 5. I don't know if that could have anything to do with it.

I am going insane as I am having to re-record most of what I have been doing.

Please help!!!!!

Thanks in advance!

Hi,

I have the exat same problem with my new iMac and an old 828 (mk 1). The 828 works on my Powerbook and other divices work fine on the iMac.
So I think it's a MOTU driver problem with Intel hardware and CoreAudio on Intel.

I told MOtu but they didn't help. They didn't listen. They said: Go to Apple.

All you can do is, tell Motu and hope for better drivers.

Hi Frank,

Right after I posted here, I found out there is a recent update for the driver of the 828 on the MOTU site. I installed it and it worked!! It should work for you too!

Good luck!

I am having the same problem with my 8pre and its driving me crazy. I have a very small session tomorrow and then a very large one all weekend and I have to figure out a work around. I also updated my my fireware on my 8pre and the software on my Mac Pro 2.8 - 8-core and it didn't work at first but so far iTunes is playing. I guess im going to have to cross my fingers or use my old PowerBook. Boooooooooo on Motu for not responding to my tech post.

Same issue with 828 Classic and Intel MacBook Pro. I've had a TechLink open with MOTU for some time, but no resolution in sight. Luckily my G4 Cube works fine with the 828.

i also had the same (or very similiar) issue for many weeks and could not solve it

a friend of mine who is one of our IT staff here at work is (surprise) a big computer buff/tweaker, so he offered to come over my studio one night a couple of weeks ago and do some more advanced troubleshooting

even though macs are not his forte, he wound up being 90% convinced that my fw bus on my motherboard is toast - which is a bummer, because my only repair option is a new one, which is around $400 or so

if i use just the fw400 port or just 800 port, all is well, but if i use both, i get the freezing and the drop outs, OS lockups, and even the 828 itself starts to act suspicious (random led spikes, etc...)

so for now i run my glyph gt's via usb, and the 828/8pre via fw 400 and leave the 800 empty

SATA here i come... :?

I also have noticed similar problems with my 828mkII. I'm running it on a G4 desktop where it has worked fine for years.

Back in January, I moved from OS10.3.9 to 10.4, and updated up to 10.4.11. I also do the security updates as they come along. The 828 problem seems to have begun in the early summer - not sure exactly when. The output will stop and sometimes it will generate high pitched noise that I can best describe as digital feedback. This noise shows up on the output LEDs. I have to power down the 828 and restart the Mac to correct it. I also tried downloading the latest driver from MOTU, but the problem persists.

Until I saw this post I thought it was just my old unit dying, but now I am starting to think it could be Apple related.

So, after some months running fine, I was working on a big project and decided to add another screen to my computer so I could fit everything I was working on with. In the process, I moved my main screen to open space for the additional one and when I started working again in the same project...surprise!! same problem of the audio interruption started!
I unplugged the extra screen and tried to put everything back the way it was, but nothing, the problem stayed! Until a friend (member of motunation too) suggested it could be the cable.

IT WAS THE CABLE!!!

So, if anyone has this problem, remember to check the cable!

Hope it helps someone else too!
