Dp6 question
Hi guys,
Im thinking of buying DP6 because I heard it's the best daw for film scoring. Just wondering because a friend has DP5 and the the how to DP5 videos as well as the MacAudioLab DVD. Since I wont get DP6 until Christmas would watching those DP5 videos help me get started? Or since DP6 has a new GUI it wont help me out?

Re: Dp6 question
As far as I can tell, most of the film scoring elements haven't changed from DP5 to DP 6 (you don't have to fix what's not broken, right?). So it probably wouldn't hurt to watch the DVD's and start familiarising yourself with the functions.

Re: Dp6 question
There are a coupla changes in the scoring side of things from 5-6, but you will quickly pick these up in the Getting Started book, 'What's New' section.
If you are not familiar at all with DP, I would say that some sort of education will be a great benefit - it has taken me 3-4 years to figure out I know jack sh!t about this program, so any kind of head start you can get will be well worth it.
Also, hava look @ the MOTU site for what is new in DP 6, that way, when you are looking at the vids you can have in the back of your mind those things that are going to look differently in 6.

Re: Dp6 question
thanks guys. So if I watch the DP5 videos they will help me get started? I know all the features wont be including as it is a new software. It's just weird how their isnt as much books/dvd's with DP as their is with other DAW's like logic or pro tools.

Re: Dp6 question
I don't know these vids, but my point is that, in general, any background information you can access will help you.
And yes, in terms of film/video, DP is one of the better DAWs, esp when it comes to surround, although Logic 8 has seen Apple catch up a fair bit. The only other two options are Nuendo or Pro Tools. The former seems to never gathered a large following, and the latter is pretty expensive, if you are just starting out on your own.

Re: Dp6 question
So I know this is a DP forum but do you guys think their is a big advantage in using DP6 over Logic studio when it comes to scoring for picture?

Re: Dp6 question
.
I don't know about that, but I know DP will give you a great environment and tools to do your music. Don't worry about "which one is better" too much. All you should care about is which app will give you the best tools and workflow to let your creativity run free with the least amount of technical distractions and annoyances.
I say DP qualifies for that extremely well. There are a few things I wish DP did (or didn't do), but I make a living out of this app, and I love it every day more. And I'm still using DP 4.61 in my main machine

Re: Dp6 question
Why not invest in the MacAudioLab DP 6 DVD? Much more extensive than the DP 5 videos (twice the content), tons more real-world project focus ... even a couple of chapters specifically covering DP and film scoring...

Re: Dp6 question
^ I totally agree! I've been purchasing their videos since version 3 of DP! They really did a good job with the DP6 video and the extra content is nice.

Re: Dp6 question
Thanks guys I didn't even know they had the new DP6 video out yet. Just wondering what you guys thought about learning 2 DAW's ex Logiic studio for loops and guitar instrumental and DP6 for film scoring?
Re: Dp6 question
I would concentrating on learning one really well first. And if you are starting from square one, I would say it could take several months to get there. It's always good to know both, but you can probably do whatever you want with either one of them. The hard part is the time and effort it takes to really master the power users techniques for getting around with peak efficiency.

Re: Dp6 question
Thanks guys for all the info. I have heard their is a lot of bugs with DP6.01 right now. Can anyone tell me what the bugs are and how long it usally takes motu to fix them?
And I will buy the DP6 video but wanted to know about the DP5 video since a friend already has them and wouldn't have to buy anything right away.

Re: Dp6 question
You can find those yourself. Just look at the DP forum. Every other post is about thatdexterflex wrote:Thanks guys for all the info. I have heard their is a lot of bugs with DP6.01 right now. Can anyone tell me what the bugs are and how long it usally takes motu to fix them?

Sorry. Bad joke. It's not THAT bad, actually. Depends on lots of things. But rest assured that MOTU is working hard on improving matters. By the time DP releases a great version, you'll know DP deep enough to enjoy!
