I agree – but the same can be said (in fact, has been said) about other libraries, particularly Storm Drum – those loops stick out like a sore thumb. I spotted a standard Stylus RMX patch on a film a while back – at the time I think I could even remember it’s patch name off by heart – sad geek that I am (at least my 14 year old daughter thought so!)

But that’s percussive stuff – obviously easier to spot reuse than with melodic libraries.

I’m just thinking about Symphobia as one more library for me to choose from, especially for the sounds/usage that it’s good at.

This Symphobia sounds fun, for sure!

Agree that it's simply too costly, at least for me.

One thing worth mentioning - they have a section of free downloads - including a
brass effects download. You just have to register on the site and then you can
access them. The freebies give you a chance to evaluate sonic quality, if nothing
else.

For those on the fence about this library, you can try out the sounds online at TrySound.com. The latency is bad but at least you can test the various sounds on a MIDI or USB keyboard. Unfortunately for me, the dang library sounds killer and just when I thought I was happy with VSL and EW Platinum PLAY, this thing comes along and screams "you need me!!!".

I believe Best Service is the site that hosts Try Sounds and it is legit. There is even a link to it on Project SAM's website. Very cool.

I know what you mean, Shooshie - like the D50 when Roland brought it out. Everyone wanted it. Then everyone recognized it. Then no one wanted it. And now it's retro-cool.

But seeing as how it limits you to certain inspirations at certain levels and ranges, it seems a little overpriced. What happens when we're all using it, and it takes about 3 seconds into a clip to say "aha... Symphobia!"

i always think it depends on the laziness of the person using it. it's like all the Distorted reality sounds (and stylus). if you use them straight out the box, of course it's going to all sound the same. (i mean thomas newman uses them all the time! and i love his stuff!) but for me, the whole point is to use it subtley as part of my pallet. and for this, it's fantastic. And it really is hard to describe what Symphobia is/does until you've played with it. It's not a traditional sample library, by any mean, and I don't feel restricted by it.

As i say, not my go-to for a realistic sound of full strings, etc, (though great for doubling over Vienna), but that stuff's an added bonus for me.

And re: cost, so it's about 800 quid, but if i've already used it in 4 soundtracks now, then it's worth it. I always think that. I must have spent about 8k on Vienna stuff, which is obscene! But then, i use it day in, day out (the same with DP!), so if i worked it out per hour over it's lifetime, it's a no-brainer. If it's the tools of your trade, you need them.
