828 mkII hardware problem

Post by rick_finlay »

greetings! My 828 mkII, 11 months old, has a fault on power up. After displaying the model and version number, the display cycles through various parameters all by itself without me touching any knobs. Looks like a hardware failure causing the buttons to press themselves. Any other ideas, or does it need to go for repair? Factory default reset is impossible as it doesn't respond to knob operations at all. Thanks for any advice

Depends on where you live. Apparently MOTU can get away with providing only a 90-day warranty in the US ... in other words, before you've figured out all the features of the device, should one of them be faulty somehow, they will have walked away and will ask for more money to fix it.

If you live in Europe, you're in a much better position, because your contract is with the reseller, not MOTU, and the minimum statutory warranty of 12 months kicks in (regardless of what any minimum-wage call-centre drone will try to convince you of).

Either way, you're condemned to starting with registering on the MOTU website and logging the issue with them there. If you live in the EU, I'd do that soon if I were you, as the device is already 11 months old.

Thanks for taking the trouble to reply. I'm pleased to report that MOTU tech support responded quickly, confirmed it was a hardware fault, and meanwhile my supplier Digital village, agreed and implemented a returns procedure very promptly, under the warranty as I'm in the UK. I don't know how long they'll take to repair/replace the unit, but so far the service has been good.

Good news, and praise due to Digital Village in that case! Once I gotten agreement from the retailer to exchange the unit, it was returned in about a week, in the same case but with completely new electronics. The problem was the discussion around whether it was chargeable or not ... in the U.K., the distributor should pick up the tab and work it out with MOTU. You shouldn't have to pay anything ... by law! ... as it's under the statutory 12 months warranty required[/] in the EU.
