Root is a "super-user" without any permissions restrictions. To be able to log as root, you have to open Directory Utility, unlock the padlock on the main window and from the menu edit, select "Enable Root User" Once that is done, you can log out from your regular account and login as root to authorize DP.

Thanks mlehmann! I just got my DP6 yesterday and was all set to get to work when...not so fast.
However, this solution worked for me. I would give it a try. Once you turn on "Root User" just type "root" for the username and the password it asked you to create, if you didn't already have a root password. I logged in as "root" activated and when back to my original account and everything is up and running.
Glad it worked! I already had that problem with DP 4.6 and repairing permissions fixed the problem. However this time, I was not so lucky until I thought about using root to authorize.

Thank You!!!!!!! Logging on as a root user got me DP6 up and running on OSX10.8!
I did have to change the all permissions to read and write on the Auth file (using get info)
and have the unlocked padlock on as i did it too....

For what it is worth...even though you got DP6 to authorize on your 10.8 machine...you will probably find DP6 to be frustrating to work with and it will most likely lead you to hate DP. It had a lot of issues. DP7 at a minimum is a MUCH better experience and everything DP6 should have been. Perhaps time to upgrade?

1. Find the invisible AUTH files for DP and delete all of them, no matter which version. There are many ways to do this but making them visible through Terminal works on all builds of OS X. I have posted the Terminal commands a number of times.
2. Run Repair Permissions in Apple's Disk Utility. This is the important step most leave out.
3. Re-authorize DP 5.13 or 6.03 while logged in as Admin or Root.
You can make 5.13 or 6.03 work in Lion or ML if authorized in 10.6.8 first, then the OS is upgraded. Only DP 7.24 and 8 can be authorized in OS 10.7 or higher.

YEah i know... never liked DP6 much, and heard lots more hates on it. but one thing at a time, got the new computer last week,(macbook pro 2.6 quad) got the new UAD satetille to replace the solo card, the old 828 Mk1 is looking prehistoric, PT10 is looking tempting(interface with my friends studios alot easier)....argh the list goes on, I just wanna make music!
