Anyone using multiple 828MK3's?

Post by pagehite »

I've got 2 828MK3s with the latest drivers and firmware installed running on Windows XP sp3. When I use only one unit, life is good. Everything appears to work the way it it should with Sonar. When I try to use both MK3s, everything falls down before I even get to Sonar. Both units have solid clock lights until I start MOTU Audio Console. Then one unit's clock light will start flashing and the console locks up. Running CueMix FX with both units up results in instant lockup of software until I shut down at least one unit. Any suggestions? I really want to end up with three MK3s, but at this rate I may have to return the first two...

I'm having similar problems with my 828 MkIII and Traveler. I think the problem is that the 828 MkIII has bad drivers or firmware or both. I think all we can do is wait and hope for a timely fix.

Well, MOTU claims that the MS implementation in XP sp2 is flawed. I'm now running one 828MK3 into the other using an ADAT connection. If this works suficiently for my needs, I'll add another 828 MK3 on the other optic connection. I'd prefer firewire so i could make all the settings from the desktop, but I'll take what I can get and see what transpires with future driver releases.

A little progress report. I'm now using the two 828mk3s with one connected to the other via ADAT. I'm using ASIO4ALL and it works great with Sonar. I can see all inputs on the firewire connected 828mk3 and 16 inputs from the ADAT connected 828mk3. Latency is neglible for my purposes. I did install a PCI-E firewire adapter card with a Texas instrument chipset and that seem to makes thing s run a little better as well. At this point I'm enjoying myself and considering that next 828mk3 so that I can hook up everything in my studio and never have to modify anything; just play music and record it. Move from synths to guitars to drum pads and never repatch anything. I've waited a long time to do this at a reasonable price point.

ISSUE RESOLVED!!

MOTU posted new drivers and firmware on Friday, 6/20. File name is 828mk3_106ud.zip. Firmware version is 1.06 and driver version is 3.6.8.1328.

These new drivers resolved all my firewire issues, I can now run multiple units and CueMix fx works just fine. I haven't checked driver latency yet, but everything is working through Sonar and Sonar shows a mixer latency of 10.7 ms using the MOTU ASIO drivers.
