New Audio Interface

Post by gcouling »

Hi there, I'm looking to buy a Firewire audio interface, and hoping some of you could steer me in the right direction. My budget is in the $500-$900 range. I'm looking for an interface with at least 4 good quality preamps and at least 6 outs. The Motu Traveler seems to be the frontrunner. I was interested in the Focusrite Saffire Pro 10, but got turned off after hearing about some bad experiences. Presonus seems to have some interfaces worth considering too. Just wondering what other peoples thoughts are.

Cheers

Welcome to the forum.....for starters, please tell us what you are using for a computer and DAW software? Also, what operating system are you on? What do you have at the present time for an audio interface, if anything at all?
Thank you,

I've just bought myself a Macbook 2.4ghz w/ 2gb of ram + OSX 10.5.2. I was running a PC previously with a M-Audio Delta 66. On my PC I was using mostly Ableton Live, but I see myself using either Logic or DP in the near future. So I'm looking for something mostly to stay in the studio, but also having the option to take it elsewhere. I also had a question about the Ultralite, you can't add an 8pre to it right? Otherwise it could be sufficient for my current needs but I would like to have the option to add additional mic preamps, I know you can daisy chain them but that would still only add 2 more preamps for the same price as 8.

Cheers

Well, couldn't you just do a single interface that you could use at home and out and about? If so, a single 8Pre would be a WONDERFUL solution because it's rack-mounted, has (8) micpres and is easily expanded. And well, it's definitely right there in your price-range. As to Logic v/s DP, both are wonderful programs---but DP is a superior program when it comes to audio recording/editing, IMHO.
Thank you,

Thanks for the reply. Ya just the lack of outputs is a bit of a concern. The presonus Firestudio and Focusrite Saffire Pro 10 are pretty much exactly what I'm looking for, I'm just not sure that they match up to the quality of the Motu interfaces.

Ah okay, I understand. Well, those interfaces are quite nice....and each is great in their own way just as each has a "gotcha" somewhere. Well, another option is the new 828mk3 with an 8pre connected via ADAT optical to take advantage of all the new mk3 unit is doing.
