Here's where to talk about preamps, cables, microphones, monitors, etc.

Need some advise: use of patch & type of mic.cables

Hello again dear Unicorners,

Thanks to some of your good suggestions (though I only quote one)

The idea of using flex duct is great -- you can locate your unit remote and create many turns w/ duct which will tend to 'kill' the sound vibes running in that duct. Remember to add good filtration...as James mentioned. "Dust Kills"

. . . I think treatment of airco and ventilation will be o.k. in a couple of days.
My next goal is to get a clear picture of how to get everything wired.
I met someone from a company named ghielmetti and asked him to send me a 48 panel pachtbay. My ideal situation would be to have the patch in a center of a starwired situation, meaning also that the mics would go directly to patch as this would be the situation for the pre-amps. The man from ghielmetti told me that this was a quitye common standard in the broadcasting world so there would be no problem at all. If this really does work a lot of problems would be solved before I even would start with my studio as the panel from ghielmetti can route everything to anywhere with every kind of signal (analog & digital) and cable.
Two questions:
1) I was thinking that you can't / should not connect the mic to something else than a pre-amp at first and that a connection between mic and patch could cause technical problems. :? :? Can I start with this box without any of these concerns?
2) Which brand of cable do you advise?
As allways, thanks in advance.

Cheers,
pedwin

the patchbay should work perfect for your application. Just try to patch condernser mics, before turning on the p-48 V because the patch can shortcut it for very short times, taht should be avoided. beside that the is no problem in using a patchbay to connect mics and preamps.

if you can get it in the netherlands i would recommend "sommer" cable.

I like the "goblin" pretty much. it sounds good and is very flexible.

You can use it for analog and digital as well.

Hey Sebasstian,
WOW! Thank you very much for your recommendation of 'sommer cables'. This was one of the most interesting suggestions I have received.
I assume any Unicornator knows them and all the other brands but for me as a newbee a complete new world of possibilities started to open . . . :D
I found a distributor and I think I'll go for the multi-pair series from SC-MISTRAL MCF to get everything wired and connected to the patch-panels.

Thanks again and best wishes.
cheers,
