Mbox2 working anyone?

Post by chrisblythenz »

Not really a DP question I know, but has anyone got the Mbox2 working with DP5.13 under Leopard? I've had some teething problems and am trying to eliminate the errors (probably human!).
Cheers

I dunno so much about the MBox2, but I have an original MBox, and it works great with DP5.13, and they use the same drivers. You have to download the CoreAudio driver from Digidesign's website (if you didn't install it along with a Pro Tools LE install). The MBox2 differs from the MBox in that it has a MIDI interface and it also is USB2 compatable, so I can't vouche for the MIDI side of things, but it should be okay.

Only thing is... why would you do that to yourself? I mean, I bought my MBox back when I was in college, back when DP3 was the latest MOTU release, and my entire department was mostly ProTools based. But I haven't bothered upgrading from ProTools since about v6.5 (pre-Intel). The MBox isn't a terrible interface, but it's not great either. Pretty good pre-amps, but noisy-as-hell line-out (high pitched whines SUCK).

If I were you, I've heard great things about the Presonus Firebox, which is cheaper, and has great support (they emailed me back all the answers. Or for just a little more than the price of an MBox2, you could move up to a Presonus FireStudio Project, which is has 8 preamps.

Unless you really want Pro Tools, the MBox is not a worthwhile purchase. But yes, it DOES work fine with DP5.

thanks for your advice. I bought the Mbox when I was on a course that used Pro Tools a lot, but I found it wasn't for me (after some 10 years with DP!). I haven't got the money to change now, but would probably look at a MOTU traveller or something if I did.
cheers
