Of the G5s, UA recommends the dual 1.8 over the others.

Do a search on this site regarding this topic. You'll find plenty of info. Also check out UA's site; they have recommendations.

This should be working, even better than the dual 2.5, cause dual 1.8 uses old pci slot, when the dual 2.0 and 2.5 use pci-x slot, which has many issue so far.

I have a dual 1.8 G5 (June 2004) and DP 4.5.2 and UAD1. Actually I have 2 of them in there. No problems at all. I wouldn't mix without them and they have some of the best tech support of any company I have delt with.

You won't be disappointed with the combination of the UAD and the newer Dual 1.8GHz G5.

Mine is very stable . . . just working out one issue with the combination of PEAK and UAD (audio crackles).

But the DP/UAD combo is trouble free.

Is the issue with Peak while using it as an "external audio editor" in DP, or is it also an issue while using it as a stand alone editor with a UAD1 card installed?

Yep, the new dual 1.8Ghz G5's are standard PCI (not PCI-X) so your 324 card should work fine (in theory, I have a 424 card).

Also I have this exact combo (dual g5 1.8ghz and uad-1) and quite happy with the performance, the UAD-1 card was a fantastic investement, lovin' it ;)

Hi all,

I have read this and the related threads with great interest. I was just about to plunk down the money for a new G5 DP 2.5 GHz machine but have come to a screeching halt based on what I read here and on the UA site.

I have two UAD-1 cards which I absolutely LOVE. In the voice of the Simpsons Comic Book Store Guy: "Best plug-ins ever." I am definitely NOT willing to lose one of my cards.

I am currently using a very functional system consisting of a G4 DP 1 GHz machine along with DP 4.52. Works great, but I can really use some more horsepower as I work with lots of tracks, long songs and complicated mixes with lots of plug-ins. Plus I also do Final Cut Pro editing which is pretty slow the G4.

Now you guys have me looking at the G5 DP 1.8 GHz machine as that apparently works great with two UAD-1 cards. But my question is ...

---> Am I really going to notice a significant performance increase with a G5 DP 1.8 GHz machine over my G4 DP 1 GHz machine?

If not, I'd rather spend the money on other things, or even just keep it in the bank!

THANKS in advance for your advice!

Erik

I think this is wrong. I believe G5's are looking for a 3.3 volt card regardless of which format they use, so a 324 card won't work at all. Better check with MOTU before making your move.

Even if it's a pci inside the dual 1,8Gh,the size is like a pci-x,so i had to change my 424 for a new one(thanks to motu it was free of charge)
But from a 324,i think you'll have to buy a 424.
It's not expensive and your old card will work.
I use a 24 I/O and a 2408mk1 with the latest 424 without trouble.

Everybody's talkin' 'bout the PCIX slots being funky with UAD-1's. What about Magma Expansion chassis? All the Pro Toolers are dumping their Magmas 'cause they won't work with the HD system. They're often on Ebay for under $400. You'd have 4-7 extra PCI slots (reg), plus some of them have 400 Watt power supplies that can take 2-4 HDs. That means a G5 DP2.5 could run UAD & Power cores, plus have a separate direct buss for SATA drives or a RAID array. Kinda solves all the problems of the G5 FW buss bottleneck & UAD's.

The 424 card is a way better card (no latency) and think of it amoritized over 2-3 years (50 cents a day). :D

What about Magma Expansion chassis?

Will this thing work with a dual 1.8 G5?!?!?! How does it hook up?
