Ultralite No Audio - Windows XP Pro x64 Edition

Post by worldwormstudios »

System Info : ASUS P5B-E Plus; Intel Core 2 Duo Processor E6600 @ 2.40GHz, 4GB RAM; A-DATA 1GB DDR-II 800MHZ x 4; WD 150GB S-ATA RAPTOR 10000 WPM 16M x 2; SAPPHIRE ATI x 1650 Pro 256MB, 128BIT DDR3 600/1400MHz 12 Pipelines Dual DVI PCI-E display card; Windows XP Pro x64 Edition Version 2003 SP2

No audio will play back. I tried it on a 32bit os and it works.

Could it be a settings issue or is it a driver problem?

Please help.....

Cheers

Gary

Motu's reply

Hello,

Thank you for your email.

If you go to the Sounds and Audio Devices Control Panel, make sure that you see the UltraLite listed as a device under the Audio tab where it says Sound Playback Device. If you see the UltraLite here, choose the Main Outs or Phones. Then, apply and re-open Windows Media Player and see if the audio comes out correctly. If this does not work, please try the following:

- Try a factory reset - push the Setup knob, turn it all the way to the right and follow the directions on the LCD. (828 mk II, Traveler and UltraLite ONLY)
- Try setting both your Optical Input and Optical Output in the MOTU Console to ADAT.
- Try setting the buffer size to 256 in the MOTU Audio Setup.
- Try a different Firewire cable.
- Try removing all other Firewire devices.
- Try different Firewire ports.
- Try powering the unit via Firewire or DC power
- Try the unit with a different computer, if possible.
- If you use a PCI Firewire card, check to make sure your card uses the Texas Instruments or Lucent chipset.
- Try reinstalling drivers.

Thanks for writing,
Nathan

No surprise here. A canned message from MOTU.

Got these useless messages too when dealing with MOTU on issues with my 828MKII. Needless to say I was fed up and have been recommending others to stay away from MOTU since.

BTW I am also in HK. Nice to see another person here from the same place.

Cool a HK brother!

I bought this new system recently and I have no luck finding a good audio interface. I have the ESP1010 for my other system but no drivers for 64 bit yet. Went to Tom Lee and bought the M-audio delta 1010 and it didn't even install. Made the pc crash and had only buzz distortion sounds. (Beta Driver) Then i installed an old soundblaster card and it worked! No problems but it wasn't what I needed for my system. So then after reading the high praise from several sites and magazines about Motu working with 64 bit os I tried. Wrong!

I bought my Motu from Central Music in HK. They have been very friendly but they have no experience with 64 bit os and have no system to try it on to see if it's my system, windows setting or drivers. They said they called some people that have vista 64 and it worked? That's a scary thought!

They also recommend me to trade for the RME but it's 1000 usd. Will it really work?

So I am thinking about installing a 32 bit os for now! I hate to but it seems to be my only solution for now.

So how long have you been here and where are you from?

Cheers

Gary

Hello,

Thank you for your email.

How much RAM is in your computer? Can you try putting in no more than 2 GB and see what happens?

sounds like drivers to me also, though I have the 896HD one thing I've also found to be a problem with some application is they require you to enable "legacy wave support" in the MOTU audio console (not cuemix but the audio console). Older versions of Acid Pro and other program that don't use the newer audio engines will show audio activity in the program itself but nothing comes out of the Motu nor do the meters on the Motu move, this is until you enable legacy wave support.

I have seen a few cases also where Motu drivers work but the install does not complete properly. This will require you remove the Motu hardware from the machine, uninstall the driver completely, restart, install drivers, then connect your Motu hardware in that order unless you desire headaches beyond measure.

Then verify in cuemix the outputs you've selected for each mix bus. Nothing like totally not assigning an output for a mix to send you in circles for hours troubleshooting. Also be sure to actually turn up the input in cuemix for the selected input on the correct mix bus

Have fun folks and before anyone asks, No I don't work for Motu I'm just an middle-aged fart with patience to read, click the mouse and turn knobs until it works.

Thanks for the comment sdialect31! So far after installing it to windows xp 32bit it has been working without any problems. (Knock on Wood)

I think I will wait until they release new drivers before I try again. Maybe by then I will try Vista if all goes well in that area.

The pc technology advancement is freaking me out. Yesterday I went to a computer area in Hong Kong. I was looking for a hard drive to back up system data. Get this 500gb (about 160usd) and 1 terabyte drives (380usd). And it's going to get crazy with the whole ram thing very shortly!!!! It will be interesting to see how fast all of these companies keep up to the possibilties.

Cheers and Happy Recording!

Problems with X64 and MOTU 828 MK2

Post by Rinmeister »

Are there any updates on this? I have exactly the same issue. Under XP 32 bits everything works fine, under X64 I get no, or very cracky sound. I did the setup twice following the instructions and doing the steps in the right order. No success though. Right now I also went back to 32 bits XP but it's frustrating. Perhaps forum members that have a working configuration with x64 shed some more light on this? Any help is appreciated.

Is there an audio interface that's on par with something like the 896HD that has working drivers and is made by a company that actually has support for their products?
