tape slowdown effect

How can I get the effect of a tape either slowing down to a stop or a tape getting eatin'
Any Ideas?

Hi Al....

You need some kind of pitch-tempo altering plugin to get the tape slowdown effect i'd say. Most sequencers have these built in to them, though some aren't great quality IMO... Which sequencer are you using? You can also get stand alone plugins. For example Soundtoys' SPEED!

I'd have thought that Melodyne would be able to do this kind of effect too though I dont have it so cant say for sure!

The tape being chewed up effect might be harder to achieve...
A strategically placed sample of a tape being eaten, in combination with the pitch-tempo plugin might do the trick!

I always recommend Airy Andre's Speedster for this type of thing, not least because it's free and a no-brainer to use:

I was going to suggest that one but it anoyingly isn't available on Intel Macs.... So didn't!

If you have Kontakt 3 (or another soft sampler) you can manipulate the sound of tape slowing down by using the "Master Tune" and sample "Tune in semi-tones" virtual knobs. It gets down pretty low that way, but the tape eating sound will probably need to be a sample of it's own.

I am using DP5
running a dual 2.7 G5
I went to the speedster site and downloaded the plug but couldn't get any further than the download. There are no instructions and when I launch it, it is looking for an app.

Is your mac an intel or a power pc? Speedster doesn't work on intel macs! Also the soundtoys speed plugin i mentioned before only works in protools so you wont be able to use that one.... Have you read this thread yet?

Hopefully we'll know in a matter of days or weeks (NAMM) whether or not DP will provide a useful and simple-to-use varispeed plug.

I just remembered this free audio unit (UB) plugin! Turntablist Pro, originally developed by 'Bioroid' but now part of 'Destroy FX'...... I've just been playing with it and it works really really well for this type of tape slow down effect....

It opens up as an audio instrument. You then load an audio file into it and press the play button on the plugin OR trigger it with MIDI notes... There is a slider on the plugin that you can use to speed up or slow-down the audio.... Anyone wanting to make a tape slowdown effect, as well as other turntable effects, should really take a look at this plugin!!!

Rats. I have DSP-Quattro and never thought to use that feature that way. Too late for me now, I ended up using speedster, but in retrospect, I think I would've got better results with DSP-Quattro. I'll have to file that away for future reference, thanks for mentioning that!
