Just following up to say that I finally bought one of the HumanScale Freedom Chairs as mentioned on the previous page. It is not the perfect solution, but I was unable to find a better one. For the most part it is just fine. The arms don't lower quite enough, so I have fashioned a cushion for when I am doing hours of guitar recording... but for short little bursts you can put the arms down and sit back and play some guitars fairly comfortably (it works fine with my telecaster, but not so well with my hollow bodies). The lowered right arm still prevents the guitar from resting properly on your leg, but it's pretty close... and the comfortable back support sure beats sitting on the edge of your chair.

The reason I needed to have the 2 chairs in 1 option is that my space is quite tight and I needed an option to quickly remove the arms and then quickly bring them back again. I pick up the guitar or bass and the arms go down, and then I put the guitar in its stand and lift up the arms again for editing and other sequence work. My shoulders are delicate, so I need arm support for most hours of the day.
I see Zed, I need arm rests for computer work also. I have my guitars one place and have the room to have a dedicated guitar chair, with a second computer keyboard on my amp. The only thing bad is the computer monitor is a not as close as I like. I can only sit so long myself.
Most chairs I have seen you have to unscrew a twist thing on the arms to take them off. My next studio is going to be on sky lab so I have 0 g's.

I wish I could remember what model it is, but I have this executive office type chair I got at a Staples (I think it was Staples... could have been Office Depot) and I found the arms were easily removed, and it looks fine and it's no longer an ordeal to play guitar in the chair. I'm finding I can live without the armrests okay.
I have an Aeron left over from my dot com days. You can lower the arms a lot. Since I work on keyboards a lot (computer - not piano, sadly) I'm prone to RM Injury and take this stuff seriously. I have the tops of the arms at about 1" above laptop height, the keyboard surface is just above (almost on) my lap.
The arms are soft padded leather, not hard plastic and with them that low, I can play guitar, no problem, although the guitar kind of sits on the right arm rather than my lap proper.
