Powerbook G4
1 Ghz
512 DDR RAM

If I up 512 more RAM am I going to notice DP running more smoothly? I would like to hear from some Powerbook DP users....

I just got 4.52 & noticed some of those Apple FX bog down my system a bit...
thanks

yes... do it. if you use samplers or instruments or lots of plugins for that matter. 512 is ok, but i just put in a 1G chip and it made things much better indeed!!!

You'll notice a nice performance increase when you double that RAM.

Although I'm not a PBook owner it goes without saying that the more RAM the better the performance and stability.

Just run your "Actvity Monitor" ( go to Applications>>Utilities>>Activity Monitor ) to see the processing going on in the background while working with DigitalPeformer.

In addition it helps the economy.

DO NOT BUY RAM OFF OF EBAY!!!! unless you really really know what you are doing. (maybe you do, I am not saying you don't)

Because> > >YOU DON"T KNOW WHERE IT HAS BEEN OR WHO HAS MISHANDLED IT!!!!!!> If you get bad ram because of this you will have nothing but Crashes Crashes Crashes.

Nor do you need to buy memory from Apple.

Here are two ram vendors I have used that are very good and have lifetime warranties on their ram. That means if it ever fails, they will replace it. That will not happen w ebay.

http://www.datamem.com -- click on "Apple/Mac Quick List" on the right hand of the home page. I have been buying RAM from them since at least 1994. about $65.00 for what you are looking for.

Other World Computing --- http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/memory/ Looks like 50.00 and up for what your looking for (I don't know your exact powerbook model)

I have been buying RAM from them since at least 2000.

Look in your powerbook manual for how to install the RAM. It is easy, but you have to follow the directions. If you don't have a powerbook manual, Download it at Apple here:

http://www.apple.com/support/manuals/powerbook/

I do not work for either of these companies. Best of luck with your upgraded powerbook!

I would highly recommend www.crucial.com. They match up ram specifically to your computer model and guarantee that it will work with your model. They also guarantee the ram for life. If you ever have any issues with it, they will replace it for free. Their prices are very good as well.

If you intend to run VIs with DP, then I'd say make the jump to 2GB (samples take up space fast). If not, try upping to 1GB and do some work with it. If that seems adequate, you're cool.

I like Kingston RAM; always use it. It's a good cost-to-quality-ratio purchase. I freelance as a 3D animator in Hollywood and nearly every prod house I go to uses it.

I bought ram from otherworld computing from EBAY, if you look and find a reputable dealer you can find deals there. Don't bid on something, find the buy it now deals from REPUTABLE dealers. They usually have deals though on ebay that are cheaper than their own sites. IF you find the same spec ram you can buy it a local pc shop, it is the same thing. But as the other guy said, be careful. Max out your powerbook. It will pay for itself in about 15 minutes, the frustrations of the beachball will go away quickly, you will see it less. And turn off auto beat detect. I went from wanting to return my powerbokk because it seemed unusable fo DP to having a fast, smokin' portable daw by turning this "feature" off. My specs are: 1.67ghz, 1.5 mb ram. Really makes a difference. Good luck.
