key follow with machfive2

Post by geoffg »

Is there an easy way to get the filters in machfive to modulate precisely with the MIDI keys? In Nanosampler, this is so easy. Set key follow to 100%, and it works perfectly. But in machfive, you assign key follow as a modulation source for the filter, and it defaults to 100, but doesn't track the keys evenly. 100 seems to over-follow the keys or something. Maybe there's a magic number in there that is the equivalent of the 100% in nanosampler?

P.S. Nanosampler cool. (So is machfive 2, but nanosampler is so beautifully simple.) :D

Unfortunately, I'm not near the marvel of M5v2 at the moment, but if it was me, I'd:
  • Turn the keygroup amplifier volume down (but not fully)
  • Turn the filter resonance up fully (hence turning the volume down)
  • Make sure nothing else is modulating the cutoff (like envelope, LFO, etc)
  • Experiment with the filter type until this produces a clear tone around the cutoff frequency when you play a note (maybe use constant pitch, too)
  • "Play" the resonance using the keyboard filter tracking
  • "Tune" the mod amount by ear until it's good enough for you
  • Notice if this is close to any mathematically useful numbers (decimal - 50, 75, 90, etc; binary - 64, 96, etc; other useful ratios - 66 or 67, 80 etc) as these may well be the "true" unity tracking value
It'd be nice if it was just easy though, wouldn't it?

Aha! After a bit of playing...

It's not "Keyfollow" you need - it's "Key" under External Sources in the modulation/automations dialogue. Set this to 1.00 and you're away. "Keyfollow" itself seems to be non-linear and a setting of 0.25 gave me one workable octave (C2-C3).

Page 138 of the manual shows the External Sources list incorrectly (Fig 8-101) so presumably "Key" is a bugfix of sorts - though the questions remain; what the hell is "Keyfollow" and why can't you select "Key" via the quick automation control next to the filter?

Anyone still using v2.00? Do you have this option?

Thanks for the info. I'll try Key instead of key follow.
