"audio processing has overloaded your computer's proces

Post by augusthour »

I've just done a completely clean install for my OS and all apps. Prior to this DP was running perfectly but I had some problems with some other apps. So I did the clean install (zeroed the HD and everything) and I reinstalled DP and the MOTU Audio Drivers for my MOTU 896HD. I'm running on a Mac Dual 2.3ghz machine (non intel) with 4.5gig of RAM. The only plugins are the ones that came with DP 5.12 (no waves etc.)

I keep getting a CPU Overload and the CPU Overload windown appears. I'm only playing back ONE track with NO effects. The CPU bar in the "audio performace" window is barly showing green at all, nothing showing in either the "Playback" or "Record" windows. Then suddenly the CPU overlaod light will appear.

I've tried the following:

••• trashed preferences for both MOTU Audio and DP
••• repaired permissions
••• made sure my optical out settings for the 896HD are set to "ADAT"
••• Flushed history
••• pruned history down
••• eliminated non-used soundbites.

What is causing this problem? NONE of my FW drives are running or even plugged in.

My buffer size is 512, work priority is "high" host buffer muliplier is 1, clock is internal, and my processor performance (in the OS) is set to "highest"

I'm at a total loss.

Any help is much appreciated as I've searched high and low and found nothing on this.

thanks

Try this:

Go to Background Processing and click on and off.
1 - Turn on / Wait until DSP analysis is needed.
2 - Turn on / Mute Soundbites under construction.
3 - Turn on / Show both analysis tasks and high priority tasks.
4 - Turn off / Automatic Beat and Tempo Analysis
5 - Turn on / Only look for beats automatically in newly created projects

I've had the "audio is overloading your CPU" problem since I set-up my new system (8 Processor Macpro/4 Gigs of RAM/2-500GB internal hard drives/DP 5.11 & 5.12/MOTU 1296/PCI424e/OS10.4.9/MX-4/Ethno Instrument/Symphonic Instrument/Stylus RMX/B4II/EZDrummer). I had the macpro tested by apple and found to be running perfectly and I've spent weeks doing tests suggested by MOTU. I also sent MOTU a project that had the CPU overload issue, but they were not able to duplicate the issue on their 8-core macpro. I've had the same experience as you - I've had the issue happen in a project with 2 stereo audio tracks - no plugs ins, no MIDI tracks. The only thing that MOTU and Sweetwater tech support can suggest at this point is for me to reinstall everything, including the OS. I can't do this right now, because I'm in the middle of jobs, but I suppose I'll have to when I have some down time. MOTU did offer to check my computer in person if I could come to them - it's 5 hours from where I live, so not a good option. It certainly does seem that plug-ins, especially non-MOTU plug-ins take a heavy toll on the CPU in DP. But again, this issue has happened in the smallest possible projects. I also occasionally have digital noise on play-back after editing soundbites. If the re-install doesn't solve this problem I'm up the creek.... You said your system was working well BEFORE you did a reinstall, so maybe there is such a thing as a bad install or reinstall. Hope this helps in some way - at least you know you're not the only one with this problem.

I MIGHT have solved this problem

Post by augusthour »

I disconnected my FW iSight camera (external, not inside the monitor) and I haven't had the issue arise since.

I imagine it's a conflict between the iSight camera and the FW MOTU 896HD.

So, if you are experiencing this issue you might try disconnecting everything on your FW buss and see what happens.

Feel free to email me with any questions and we can troubleshoot together:

I don't have an iSight camera hooked up, but I have some firewire drives plugged in....I'll disconnect and see it if makes a difference...worth a try!

thanks for the info...
