UA Studio Onscreen DVD ?how is it?

the clip on the UA site makes it look kinda like a promo more than educational.
I am more of a player/ writer in my home studio .
I have 3 UAD1 cards with most of the
plugs.
what would be a good way to learn how to use the different compressors ,eq's etc...correctly.
Are their any good books out there for software based itb mixing/mastering that can show me basic concepts.as a non engineer to help me learn this that would be better?

I thought it would teach me something, but it turned out to be a promo especially for the 610.
