Its funny how much other people have influence over me. After hearing about Logic Studio, this is the first place I turned. This thread itself has been a roller coaster. Up the exciting hype climb to a plummet to trepidation, banking around desire, need, even lust before a massive double loop of fear for my beloved DP, all before cruising safely into speculation.

Future ambitions of Apple aside, it remains that this is a great deal. If only to have another tool in your arsenal for that time when a client asks, do you have Logic. I am excited about Main Stage as I think that might be a great solution to a problem that some of us have had around here. It looks like a Receptor thats easier to use.

Some of the plugs look great. That delay designer is going to be fun to play with. Soundtrack Pro, havent used it much but it should be nice as a external editor, even with DP.

Its a funny thing, I came from Sonar in the PC world and they went the route of using those annoying icons like Logic too. My only guess there is that if you add up all the pro studios in the world, or the people who make money from the software they use, that number is very small. But if you target those who want to be pro, or want to feel like they are pro, then that is a big market.

Just the other day, I was in an airport while someone was installing Photoshop on a friends PC, I looked over and saw them running a "keygen" to get the serial. Well, with the price of Logic Studio, and all you get with it, I think some people just might buy it rather than steal it.

Anyways...I bought it. We'll see how it works and how good the tools are. It was easier for me because I got my Apple Tax credit from buying the iPhone early. My Fanboy tax credit made it $100 less.

Maybe Steve Jobs simply wants those who matter to get their hands on his software and start making things.... You've summed up the last 20 years of my life, with the highlighted section being the epitome thereof. :D
I'm still hankering for the opportunity to discover what I can do.
I "had" to check this thread out today.
I'm still several critical plugs away from being able to produce product:
Altiverb, Ozone, Vintage Warmer, MachFive and/or Ethno and MSI.

It's no secret that I've been "pushing" MOTU to update (radically) the included plugs, both in terms of quality and quantity.
My more or less constant requests for "complete" out-of-the-box studio functionality and speculation regarding the content and timing of DP 5.5 must have seemed tiresome to many users who, for the most part, were concerned with DP's stability and not much else.
Anyone wanna poo-poo me now? Oh, that's right... that's my job.
[Monkey fires steaming poo-mo from point-blank range into his face].

Hence my dilemma. If MOTU doesn't radically alter what I get when I purchase/upgrade DP soon, I'll likely have to voluntarily walk the plank.
I'm loyal. I believe in MOTU. I have had to believe in MOTU, as my budget doesn't allow for misgivings and an overly uncertain future.
Who's gonna save the monkey's ass?
Will MOTU step up to the plate?
Will the Apple product turn out to be a hyped lemon?
Will Logic lure me away from Banana Alley and the pseudo-paradise I currently frequent, UnicorNation?
Will there be a sillier question posed by year's end?

Confused and with a synapse-splitting headache, I'm afraid the last 24 pages of this thread have only served to baffle an already-intellectually-compromised primate.
Clarity at this point is at a premium; it's certainly beyond my budget.

Well maybe apple figures the majority of people would choose to purchase it at a lower price than try to download 46 GB.

"pro tools killer" is something you hear a lot of nowadays, and seldom is it from the manufacturers themselves. as native daws become more powerful and feature-rich (laden?), it's just the obvious comparison. neither logic nor dp could or ever would be contenders for that title at any time in the near future, as they simply lack the high-end post features that are requisite. nuendo is probably as close as it gets.
apple isn't gunning for the protools market, because in a very real sense, they already HAVE it. let's remember the history, folks. pt didn't used to have MIDI. so what did people use? dp or logic. the SOLID MAJORITY of logic's high-profile userbase only use it to front-end protools anyway. many just use it to compose, then go to pt for the "real work". bt, for instance, writes in logic (which he also uses to front end pt), edits with peak pro, and does audio in pt.
imo, apple positioned themselves exactly where they want to be with logic studio, and that is exactly the same place fcs is positioned. if you need more than imovie or garage band, but don't really require a pthd rig or an avid system...they're the best game in town. and it's all integrated just like ilife...
they're not gunning for the top spot. they're gunning for those that have serious needs, but just aren't quite "hardware serious" yet. and the logic studio/final cut studio combination positions them as THE end to end solution...with an incredibly modest pricepoint.
i think, having played with l8 a little bit...that the major feature is the rewrite itself, and the streamlining of the workflow. if you're familiar with cubase or the like, it's not really much different at this point. i think the new added features are further down the road. it may be a "big day", but only in the sense that it's a birth. i think there's a lot of growth yet to come.
i don't think anyone should panic. l8 is still logic, like it or leave it. dp will still have its market, as will all of the others. it is certainly should light a fire under the competition, which is good for us. featurewise, mac daws have been seriously lagging behind their pc bretheren for some time now. perhaps this kick in the pants to all of the big players will change that.
the damage will happen because apple can offer solutions at various pricepoints...from the basic 4-track level all the way to dvd production. this is nothing new, either, and quite frankly, on the hardware and vi side, motu still stands to gain a LOT of business as a side effect, regardless of lower dp sales...but i'm sure the folks at motu have big things on their roadmap too.

this is quite a groovy thread.

James Steele wrote:Huh? I don't get it... what is your point. I started a list that flags people selling burned DVDs of commercial apps. Many of these may be apps that are protected by serial numbers. I'm in favor of apps being protected by dongles like iLok, because I think iLok goes a long way to discourage piracy. Everybody says the "casual user" is discouraged. How many casual users can find a way to defeat an iLok?

I don't believe that security keys or copy protection is bad. If it were completely removed from all apps you could kiss most of the audio developers goodbye. I'd fully endorse DP using iLok as well.
My point is that despite the variety of protection schemes, piracy is rampant, to the point where you found it necessary to take matters into your own hands.

At the industry level, protection has not solved the problem, and we still need a tighter solution, or a change to the business model. MS has chosen the former -- they want to examine your PC before you install something, Apple has chosen the latter.

I agree that the iLok is the least intrustive of the options available; mine has been trouble free (so have my Syncrosoft and Logic keys) . But the hackers just have to buy an iLok. They still don't have to buy the software. Like you, I want the problem solved so companies like Elemental can stay in business.

Apple said, more or less, just that in reply to questions about the price drop. With the big increase in the number of people with Macs, they wanted to get Logic into the hands of as many people as possible.

It could also be a signal that Apple thinks the market is mature and saturated, and the product has become a commodity with competition based on price. If so, as you suggested, they have to move on and introduce a next gen product to stay profitable. So will MOTU.

The only thing I don't like about dongles like Syncrosoft is they check continuously even when the project is rolling and cause problems. If they were used to simply open the program and it lasted until the next reboot then fine. Syncrosoft dongles are a PITA in this regard. MOTU's much less so. VSL uses the same crappy Syncrosoft dongle and it's really bad if you happen to remove it to say plug a printer or something in the same port. The software will never again be recognized until you boot the machine with the dongle in place.

These keys are very inconvenient and the industry has force them on us to protect their software. It seems this could have been done without the hardware with proper schemes but what do I know.

Take that LOCK your your front door. I don't know why you have one.
.
I wasn't being critical of your efforts on the pirate list. Just pointing out that piracy is so rampant, you can only practically address a small piece of it.

As for LOCKs. Yes, I have them. I've had two break-ins and lost all my equipment and instruments both times. The police advised me that locks are useless, and what I need is a lot of lighting, a very loud alarm, lots of insurance, and a house in a neighbourhood with a lot of people around all the time. That's what I did. Still have the locks, because they make me feel good, but objectively I know they're ineffective.

Frodo wrote:It's never a matter of getting a DAW to make "better music".
You're right in the sense that "music" is the composition underlying the realization of the work. However, every improvement in the tools available to the composer/performer, particularly when we're talking VI's, allows expression to more closely approach an ideal. For years I stayed away from acustic piano sounds (unless a quality, in-tune, real piano was available for the session) because the sampled pianos sucked so completely. Now, with Ivory, my mixes can incorporate exposed piano, and my depth of expression in not limited by my tools. Lather, Rinse, Repeat, replacing "piano" with "drums" (BFD), "strings" (VSL/EW), etc.

I have been considering picking up a B3 VI for some time. I love playing a great B3 sound, but do not plan on putting a real one, with Leslie, in my studio. My Motif is adequate but uninspiring as an organ. I could go Nord, but we're talking a grand for even the rack version. I could go with NI's B4, but reviews have led me to believe Logic's included B3 emulation is just as good. I also like the Clav and EP VIs included with Logic. And I don't like the NI registration process.

Furthermore, I know more folks will be using Logic, now that it is available at the lower price point. Many of these people will be my clients, so familiarity with Logic is a compelling arrow in my quiver of skills. And intergration with Soundtrack, which is being used by one of my collaborating documentary producers, is another Logic plus.

I guess I am feeling it is a good time to test the waters. I'll still own and use DP, and may well find that it is my preferred DAW as it has been since Performer 1.x. I just need learn the facts of life first-hand.

It may not help make better music, but it seems to have a very nice variety of tools at a decent price point.
