APP to backup entire HD including Authorizations.
Hi... trying to make a backup of my entire HD incase of problems... tried Superduper, but as soon as I try to launch DP from the restored image it asks me for my serial number... so obviously something's up...
is there an app out there that can CLONE your entire HD and then upon resotre your apps don't know anything has changed?
thanks!

Hi
Carbon Copy Cloner is good HD cloner.

Some applications require serial number always even if you
copy entire Startup Disk. I don't know solution for that.

From what I've gathered...programs like Dp and others will require you to instert the cd and initialize them again because they have been moved to a different part of your HD. The best backup program in my opinion is SuperDuper. I've used pretty much every backup prog. available and to me it's the best one. You can get it for free, but in order to do smart backups (backup just the things that have changed since last backup) you have to buy it.

I do this and it works:
Start from an external OS X disk (or Original OS X DVD)
Launch Apple Disk Utility, choose the disk that you want to clone an save it as partition (compressed or not, your choice).
When you want to restore it to the same or another disk (same size or greater), use always Disk Utilities. This procedure will mantain DP and NI registrations. If you have Spectrasonics stuff like Athmosphere i think you will redo the registration.
I tryed CCC and SuperDuper... but this is the best cloning method.

I use SuperDuper, there was an independent study done of ALL of the backup programs and it scored the highest for preserving permissions and resource forks (along with other stuff). I used to use Carbon Copy Cloner. They are both good, but I think SD is a little bit better. All my backups are done every night at 4am and they work like a charm.

From what I've been told....the reason that DP and some programs like Reason , ect. require a reauthorization is because they are not in the same spot on the hd when you restore from a backup. Every program I've ever used though I had to re-auth DP and Reason and Recycle.

I still don't think it will work, because if you ever have to restore from the backup, the files are not going to reside in the same place they were before on the HD. That's the reason apps need to be reauthorized (at least that was how it was explained to me) when you backup...because their spot on the hard drive is in a different place.Rush909 wrote:in looking at Disk Utility... it seems to have an option to create a disk image... could I just create a disk image from disk utility, and then restore that disk image... anyone try this? that will be my next option if CCC does not do the trick... oh I wish everything was on ilok!!!
Some techie guy told me that.....so don't quote me on it....but I asked him the same question about backing up and that was his response.

well I've tried CCC and same thing... DP asks to reauthorise... not a big deal... as well as the entire NI range.... and I think I know why that is... they are saying that my Computer ID has changed... which makes sense since I am actually restoring to another HD... I think If I actually resotre to the same HD, this will not be a problem... no matter... thanks for all the feedback... Just gotta reauthorise... no biggie...
