Fastlane icon "gray" in Audio/MIDI SetUp

Post by Psalm62_1 »

Hello,
I'm having a problem with my MOTU Fastlane NOT being seen by my computer.

I have just installed the latest Mac Sec. Update and then updated my MOTU DP software from 5.11 to 5.12. I used my "Disk Utility" to repair permissions and then rebooted my computer.

When I opened an existing project to add a MIDI track, I noticed that my Alesis QS8.1 wasn't sending signal to the computer. I went to my "Audio MIDI Setup" , and noticed that the "Fastlane" icon was gray.
I also noticed that I now have a "Network" icon.
In any case, I tried to re-scan and still, no Fastlane.

I then deleted my Fastlane icon, the Alesis QS icon and Alesis SR-16 icon. I figured I would just try the "Auto Configure".
When I clicked on "Start", nothing happens.

I then went to MOTU's site and noticed that there was a firmware update for Fastlane. I downloaded and installed it and restarted the computer.
I checked in Library/Audio/MidiDrivers and System/Library/Extensions/MOTU MIDI DRIVER.kext. It showed that the new update was in both places.

Again, I went to my "Audio MIDI Setup" , reconnected my Fastlane via USB and tried to configure. Again....... nothing. It's as if the Fastlane isn't connected at all.

I disconnected and reconnected the USB cable several times and still no Fastlane in my Audio MIDI SetUp.

This is sooooooooooooo frustrating!!! :?

Does anyone have any ideas as to what I can do to get my MIDI stuff back online??

Thank you!! Have a great day!! :)

Isn't there an unusual MIDI thru button on the Fastlane? Try toggling that-- and make sure that all cables are firmly seated.

Also, try logging out and logging back in, and/or shutting down the computer completely for a minute or two (instead of using the Restart feature).

You may want to try going to:
User Library> Preferences> Digital Performer> *Preferences*

Delete this Preferences file. Doing so is a common workaround for general misbehavior in DP. When you reboot DP, this file will regenerate itself automatically.

Also, sometimes audio-MIDI setups get corrupted. Instead of rebuilding the same Audio-MIDI setup, create a whole new setup from scratch. I strongly recommend rebuilding your Audio-MIDI setup without DP running. When DP is rebooted, it should load the new AM setup.

Before you delete the old setup, take a snapshot of the old Audio-MIDI window just for a visual reference (Shift-Apple 3 for the entire desktop, Shift-Apple-4/position cursor and click on the window/Space Bar-- just to grab a specific window). As you rebuild your new Audio-MIDI setup, double click on the picture file that appears on your desktop. This will open in Preview so you can do a side-by-side.

It may also be necessary to delete your Bundles and rebuild those as well in case the old Bundle config is hanging onto older file references which repairing permissions could not dislodge.

Once you've done that, repair permissions again just to make sure the new configurations, preferences, and associated property list files ('.plist' files) are pointing to the right places and are allowing access to your new settings.

One last thing to check-- make sure your old drivers are not lingering somewhere on your computer. Sometimes the MIDI installer may just add a driver instead of replacing/dumping the old one.

Fastlane unit is the culprit

Post by Psalm62_1 »

I would like to thank Frodo and everyone else for your help with my MIDI issue.:D

As it turns out, my Fastlane unit is the culprit. :( I'm not sure if I want to replace with another Fastlane. If anyone has an opinion on this, I'd be glad to hear what you think.

I only have two external MIDI devices. Although, I do have Virtual Instruments like MOTU Symphonic Instrument.

Thank you again for all your help.

Oh, I did contact MOTU Tech support about this.

Just in case anyone else runs in to this problem..... once it was decided that my problem was the Fastlane unit itself, MOTU tech support offered information on how to get the Fastlane unit repaired.

"If you would like to send us the Fastlane to be repaired, respond to this Tech Link with a VISA or Mastercard number, expiration date, and card security code. There is a flat fee of $39.95 for Fastlanes not within the 90 day waranty. Usually, a replacement or repaired Fastlane will be shipped within 5-10 business days of receiving the original. Once it is shipped to you, you will receive an email containing a UPS tracking number. In addition to your credit card information, please include your address, email, and telephone number in your response."

Hi

I have been using Midiman MIDISPORT 2x2 for years.
It has been working well. It is simple and reliable.
