grouping tacks to edit

Post by sjpc0 »

I'm having difficulty grouping tracks in order to edit in the sequence editor.
When I get to the sequence editor and select a track in the group, which I assume should then select the rest of the tracks in the group only the track I select is hilighted.
Am I doing something wrong here?
cheers

Track grouping: DP 5 User Guide page 710-713.

Thanks GearBoy and Bob.
I've examined both suggestions however I'm still not getting anywhere.
Essentially if I have two tracks--call them guitar and bass and I'd like to do some editing on those two tracks as a group I should be able to group them
and edit them together. So, I've done the grouping in the sequence editor however I cannot seem to get them editing together unless I high light the tracks separately. That's fine for two tracks but not for a ten track drum kit.
Sorry to sound dumb as I'm sure this is simple BUT I'm not getting it.

I've never grouped tracks in DP for editing, and edit multiple tracks (of drums, gtrs, etc) together all the time by clicking on a waveform, hitting shift, and clicking on another parallel waveform.

Make sure the group type is 'Edit' or 'Edit + Mix.'

I've tried checking off 'edit' as well as 'edit and mix'. Gearboy's latest comment suggests however that perhaps what I'm trying to do can't done in DP. Is that true folks? In Pro Tools this is a simple function and yes, Gearboy, the way you edit across multiple tracks is the way I have been working in DP as well because everytime I try grouping I end up being frustrated.

Bad stuff...editing with DP! I know your frustration when editing tons of 8-tracked drums. Try to click in the sequence W in a blank space out of the regions BEFORE clicking on a grouped track. This action usually reset the strange brain-logic of DP!

Maybe you have a corrupt preferences file or something else that needs troubleshooting - you might want to contact MOTU about this. (Or try deleting the Preferences file in the folder (User name)->Library->Preferences->Digital Performer and restart DP.)

If the tracks are grouped correctly, this type of editing should be no problem - I do it all the time, for all sorts of Soundbite edits, volume automation, etc. on anywhere from two tracks on up to entire projects of 30 plus tracks. Be sure to read through the whole section in the User Guide on grouping, and make sure you haven't accidentally disabled track grouping (I forget the key command - look it up).

Daniele99, editing in DP is not 'bad stuff' by any measure. It may have some quirks, and other programs may have some editing features you prefer, but DP is used all the time for professional recording projects.

Well that's interesting. This may be the problem since a few other very odd things are going on here. I had to trash the prefs when I worked in OS9 all the time. Didn't think this would happen in 10

I love editing audio in DP. I edit multiple tracks simultaneously all of the time (like 8 tracks of drums) and never have a problem. I simply highlight the tracks to be edited and use the scissor tool in combination with the other tools. Never an issue. I just finished a commercially released record where all of the drums were comp'd together from multiple takes on each song (best verse, chorus, etc.) and I just edited 270 tracks of audio for a feature length comedy. No problems.

Here's a handy trick....I create groups called "show/hide" groups. These are groups of tracks with only the "show hide" function enabled. This way I can option-click a group of tracks in the SE list that I want to look at without necessarily having them linked in any other way. Doing this i can quickly "select all" and make a scissors cut anywhere i want.

The frustrating about selection grouping is that it doesn't seem to work without all the audio being the exact same length. That's why you can't click on one piece of a group and have other pieces that are different highlight as well.

And don't forget the all important "lasso" tool (option-control) which allows you to select multiple pieces just by dragging over them.

..and that is the difference betweeen PT and DP. All that time I've been using DP (after many years of PT), I've missed this working group-editing in Sequence-window. If the tracks are grouped, there shouldn't be any exceptions.
