pci 324 with G5 I did it!

Post by dannyjm »

I bought the dual 1.8 because I thought the PCI slots would be compatible with legacy cards. Turns out they use 5 V 66 MHz but 3 V signal and "funny" slots with dividers in the wrong place for 324 cards. Problem fixed with PCI expander from AVID on Ebay for 125 bucks. PCI bridge chip figures out the situation, plus I now have 6 extra slots for more UAD-1's.

From one New Hampshire guy to another. Thanks! We have several old cards at PSU and new G5s. This is a cheaper way to go!

Peace

Great, so get ready for a little crash fest !

...Seriously, the 324 doesn't "work well" (!) in OS X. If you're lucky you'll get it to work in DP, but other than that there's only one thing that works fine with the 324: Kernel Panics. :p

If you want stability and efficiency, upgrade to the 424.

I see no Avid distribution pci card. How do you know it's included?

I have been using the PCI-324 under Panther just fine. To get rid of the kernal panics I use the 324 only for Digital Performer. All other audio goes out the internal audio. It has been working fine under Tiger as well (also only using 324 for DP).

ok, I'm back. I admit I may be celebrating prematurely. All I've done so far with the 324 is record a bit of stereo program. I have an 828 with a behringer ada8000 connected to the adat lightpipe. The 324 and 2408 I plan to use mostly for playback so I can mix 24 channels with my mackie 24/8buss. 8 from the 828, 8 from the behringer and 8 from the 2408. What does cuemix do that I can't do with my mackie?
The avid box I bought came with a universal host card that fits into the G5 pci slot right next to my uad-1. Then a ribbon cable connects from the host card to the expansion unit. I think the slower pci buss and the kernel crash potential may darken my future joy, but so far, so good. Tomorrow I will experiment some more.

The latest: i got my mackie 24/8 board back from the repair shop and now have 24 track playback for mixdown. one track for each channel of the mackie. Of course I can assign multiple tracks in DP to each output/channel as needed. To recap: i have 8 io's with 828, 8 io's with behringer ada8000 connected to 828 lightpipe, and 8 io's through 2408/324. I Have Not Had Any Problems with this setup yet.

Uh oh, hey, what is a kernel panic anyway? I think I might be experiencing them. When I leave the G5 on overnight and come back, its fans are going full blast and the screen is dark and the machine is unresponsive. I have to force a reboot. It happened once or twice before the 324 card but now it happens regularly.

You may want to take a look at your ram, and make sure there isn't a bad stick(s) in one of the slots.
You can use "Apple Hardware Test CD" that came with your Mac to check. It is by far the best test to determine bad ram.
I had this problem recently, and I was getting all kinds of kernal panics. Apple support helped me find the problem using the Apple Hardware Test CD. Replaced the ram, and everything has been peachy.
Hope this can give you some direction.
