What type of music do you compose/produce with DP?

Post by n8tron »

Lets be pretty general here ie:

Rock
Folk
Metal
Pop
Electronic
Trance
Hip Hop
Rap
Classical

or if you just use it for production (don't compose yourself just use it at your studio)

I use it for mainly Electronic and Classical. Have used it for Rock/Folk but mainly use Pro Tools for that and stick with DP for the former styles.

I like recording audio in pro tools, the workflow suites my style better. Plus I can edit audio much faster in pro tools.

I really do both in both though.

Show music, also Christian music. My specialty is orchestral stuff. For the show I'm working on now, I did a dance number with a Gaelic feel. Used some of the Celtic samples from EthnoInstrument. I used Gaelic Storm (the band that played in "Titanic") as my model. It came out quite well.

Stuff that I think sounds new and everyone grooves to and says it's retro.

I often create a groove with lotsa synths and the LinnSequencer, then bounce the MIDI over, and a stereo mix, into DP. Then retrigger the synths from DP's MIDI, to record stems, or separate audio trax for each synth.

Sometimes I just line em up.

Then I squash/master the mix and bounce to disk.

Then I do it all over again.

styles? hmmm, you could say easy jazz funk progressive 80's experimental rock hi-energy synth-pop

I'm all over the place.

Today, I'm working on a straight cover of Cypress Hill's "Insane in the Brain." I just finished a second pass on a funk version of Soundgarden's "Spoonman," odd time signatures and all. Horns, slap bass, you know the drill.

No vocals on either; some other joe gets to do that. This is for a videogame.

Tonight, I need to put some sound effects on an animation I built for the Chicago Bears. An arena, jumbotron thing.

So, I've back-pocketed my concept album about a man who buys a baby hippo to impress his neighbors. It's tentatively titled "Hippo!"

unfortunately the one thing i don't make with DP is money...that's what Final Cut Studio is for!

(edit...not true, i have sold a handful of records on CD baby...like 30 bucks in profit whooo hooo!)
why would i want to skin a cat?
