MIDI out on Ultralite

I can't seem to route MIDI data out of my Ultralite.

I have a MIDI cable out of my controller into the UL. The UL is connected to my Macbook which is triggering Ivory piano software. The engineer is taking a SPDIF cable from the UL into his recording system.

We're getting great audio, but would like to capture the MIDI data as well. I thought that the MIDI data would automatically pass through the MIDI out from the UL but it doesn't. Any help would be appreciated.
