How's 10.4.9 working for you?

How's 10.4.9 working for you?
I'd been going along perfectly fine with 10.4.8. And then the After Effects CS3 beta rev2 (May 16 build) came out on May 15 that required 10.4.9 and QT 716. So, I cloned my drive, updated to 10.4.9, and the new AEb. Unmitigated disaster. Crashing left and right.
So, I re-installed 10.4.8, and all is well again, except I can't run the AE8b rev2, which is not a huge loss. AE8b rev1 (April 16 build) is working well enough.
So, I'm wondering, yet again, as Apple is upselling us on a new OS, have they delivered a solid OS for once since 8.6 before moving on to a new one?
Or, is my experience the exception, and not the rule? How's 10.4.9 working for you?
Jim

The software for my Skype phone has quit working. It was pretty buggy when it did work though.
That's been my only real problem. Photoshop and Bridge seem a little buggy, but I think that's Adobe's fault, not 10.4.9.

Jim, I haven't had the guts to do the upgrade.
There just seem to be too many glitches reported here for mine.
If you really need After Effects updated, then I s'pose you have no choice.
If not, I'd seriously consider sticking with 10.4.8.
No significant new audio features seem to have been added in 10.4.9.
I believe there've been iTunes problems, amongst others, too.

All seems fine on my PPC with 10.4.9. I have heard rumors (via our furry-toed friend Frodo by the way) of a 10.4.10 release in the hands of beta testers now... audio-oriented trouble busting has been bandied about as one of the primary reasons for the update.

The last link above even suggests we might see a 10.4.11, as Leopard is not due until October!
I am all for completely ironing out 10.4 bugs, as I do not plan to migrate to Leopard, at least for DP, until well after the bleeding edge has coagulated. I do run multiple system partitions, with one devoted to DP. You could have separate partitions running 120.4.8 and .9 respectively if you wish.

I've got 10.4.9 but the version you get from system update is bjorked - you have to go to Apple's support site and download the "combo update" to get a good version. Once done, all is ok.

Halfling reporting in for duty:
Still on 10.4.8 based upon all I've read in various posts on U-nation.
However-- I have 10.4.9 and DP 5.11 on my PBG4 1.5Ghz and have had no crashes whatsoever. I started running Finale 2006d with GPO just within the past week or so. Other than the usual distortion and keyswitch jamming, there have been no DP-specific problems.
For the MacPro and G5 towers, I'm sticking with 10.4.8 for now with more than a modicum of certainty. Just aint gunna do it. The G5 is doing quite well with X4.8-- I've gained a whole new appreciation for that machine-- but with the MacPro at least, I do plan on installing Leopard at least as part of a boot partition configuration while retaining Tiger.

it seemed okay till i updated some ilok-based plugs...then all hell broke loose. immediately after installing psp nitro (ilok), i got a kernel panic. then another after installing one of the sonnox plugs (also ilok). motu mentions on their support site that msi standalone may not run if you do the online update. however, after a fresh install, using the 10.4.9 combo installer, i'm still having the same problems...
so, rolling back to 10.4.8 here...

well, actually, it turned out not to be worthwhile at all...
the psp nitro installer still causes kernel panics in 10.4.8.
i dunno what it is about the nitro ilok installers. two versions ago, my system said the installer dmg was corrupt or invalid (stuffit wouldn't open it either). i tried downloading it several separate times, to different disks (in case i had a bad sector or something), and kept getting the same result. so i had to use the passkey version (which worked fine). the last ilok installer worked, but the plugin had the frozen gui. i think i'm just gonna give up on the ilok with psp stuff, and just d/l the passkey versions, and hope THEY don't cause me any trouble.
fun stuff

Shame. Poor Kell.
At least with the passkey versions, if you run into trouble it'll likely be on a per-plug basis.
Using iLock, you're more likely to exprerience a problem that'd affect all your PSP stuff, right?

nope, that's the weird part. it's only the psp nitro installer that i seem to have trouble with. everything else has always worked fine. though, i'm glad they (and izotope) give you the passkey or ilok option. if my ilok dies, msi, altiverb and sonnox are doa till i get a new one.monkey man wrote:Shame. that said, i do like the ilok, and actually prefer it to entering keys...but either way...as long as it works, i'm okay with it.

So now you have to authorise any PSP plugs individually any time you install 'em, as opposed to pluggin' in/referring to yer iLock?
I've not seen one of these new-fangled contraptions, and was extremely skeptical as to their true usefulness, but am slowly coming 'round as more Unicorns report satisfaction with the situation.
I used to dread the day MOTU made their use mandatory for running DP.
Now I'm starting to think I should apply the "MOTU knows best" philosophy to the situation.
Glad you can work around the issue though Kell, and kudos to PSP for giving you that alternative auth option.
