828mkII FW just melted down

Post by williamsongs »

Anyone ever see this before? In a VERY simple setup, a brand new 828, brand new Dell dimension 520 (dual core pentium, 2gb ram, SATA raid drives)
ART Digital MPA recieving wordclock from the 828, feeding SPDIF into the 828. Cubase SX3 recording. Working just great for two hours, then...
click... HUMMMMMMMMMMM in all outputs. Sample rate indicators go dim, but still respond to changes from the software.
I shut down everything, wait 20 minutes, restart. The 828 reads "FirmwareUpgrade" and the PC says no drivers are present for this. I reload the install program with drivers, fire it up again, now it recognizes the 828, but still the HUMMMMMM.
I tear down again and now I think I smell melted plastic in the 828.
Anyone see this before? Did we blow an op-amp somewhere? How?
Will MOTU blow me off? This unit is five months old, and still under warantee.

I think their stuff is only 90 days unless it's different where you are. Either way, I wouldn't risk wasting any time on it. They may be nice about it and get you an RMA (under warranty).

Wishing you luck,

George

Fried 828mkII FW

Post by williamsongs »

Well, you're right... 90 days guarantee and I am just outside of that. However, I did get through to MOTU on my first call, got the RA set up and am sending them back the fried unit today.
Seems relatively hassle free at this point. We'll see how fast I get the replacement though, I am in NY and they are in Boston - so maybe it'll be quick. Meanwhile we twiddle our thumbs here in the studio.
Maybe we'll fire up the reel-to-reel today!
