How Much Hard drive space needed.

Post by jjoliver998 »

Hi there.

This is the type of thing that if you know it'll be easy, but as i don't know it's hard . . .

I have just purchased (From ebay as funds are tiiiiiiiiiiight) an old motu 24i. It's on a cheap PC and it's running fine (a couple of teething problems only) and i was wondering how much hard drive space a gig of 1hr will be, recording 24tracks at 24bit, 48wassnames.

I know it doesn't cost much to add a new very large hard drive and that'd solve my problem but it didn't cost that much for the looms, the rack mount PC kit, the rack to put it in, the LCD screen to carry to the gigs and it's just adding up. Typical problem, eyes bigger than the budget, now my eyes are red and stressed and the budget well gone. AND i've got to get a cheap bit of software to record it all on (Any suggestions, was looking at tracktion). The machine is simply for record only and I have my MACBook with logic 7.2 on and I'll be doing mix down on that so . . .

1. How much HD space for 1hr record at 24bit/48 wassnames?
2. Cheap multi track recording (only don't want synths / effects / etc) software?

Thanks

Josh

For 1 mono track, average file size of 24 bit/48 kHz = 8.3 MB per 1 minute.

I used to read caveats about not getting too big of a hard drive because of read/write access times. Do those limitations still exist with the newer drives?

For the live recording I do, it can be as much as 700MB per minute which is roughly 125GB (gigabytes) per Sunday. So yeah, you can never have too much hard-drive space! 8)

It's cheaper than 2" tape, too!
