DP vs Logic Pro

Post by P1000 »

hi there, new here.

like a lot of logic users about, i am wondering what on earth apple are doing with logic, if anything. so they have a policy of not letting anything out of the hat, but that causes some worries at times.

I have a production company writing for tv and film, three writers all using logic. as we are busy setting up a new studio i started looking at alternatives. DP looks like the most likely candidate for the way we work ( Pro Tools seems a nightmare with MIDI and cubase feels and looks like a toy)

Is there a demo version of DP availible, am assuming not. i noticed an upgrade price from competition software, have to supply serial of my logic copy etc. does this disable my logic copy?
How can i get to try DP before making the change and setting up three systems.

thanks

You are correct, there is no demo version of DP available.

Supplying your Logic serial number (actually I believe you have to provide proof of purchase, with something like a scanned receipt) doesn't "de-activate" your copy of Logic. You can easily have both DAW's on the same computer. I have three - DP, Logic Express, and Cubase AI.

You'll have to buy DP if you want to "try it out". Unless someone who has it will let you play around with it for a day or so on their system.

hate to say this on a DP forum, but might as well wait through the year for the next logic. If it doesn't come out by then maybe consider switching.

Its a lot of time and money to invest in a new DAW. But if you need to switch now for some reason or another DP is probably the best place to go for you.

Also if Logic's overhaul is not to your liking, then I'd definitely check out DP. But unless Logic is just not working for you, I'd stick it out.

No demo available.

I recently just switched over from Nuendo and Cubase via a crossgrade.
Best $329 I've spent in a while.
Motu asks you to send in page 1 of the manual from the app you are crossgrading from, no info about your license at all,

no idiotic dongle needed for DP like Logic/ Nuendo either.
just enter the serial number and go!!!!

just do it I say !!!!!

best-

Cubase is not a toy, and it has it's strengths, like DP and Logic. There are good threads about problems with DP here and every professional who's looking into crossgrading should pay close attention to them. I've been amazed how well and badly DP handles things. IMO it's never a bad idea to add a DAW to your arsenal.

MOTU isn't exactly forthcoming about developments either. However, I think their recent development of DP -- say, over the last two years -- has been commendable.

I use DP for short-form tv scoring (as well as other music writing/mixing tasks) and find it very capable. I think improvements could be made to be handle long-form, multiple-cue work, but it seems suitable for many working in that arena.

I also happen to think DP is excellent for MIDI editing and audio mixing. Others may disagree.

I'd counter that with this:

1. Like most help-oriented user forums, most people who post here only only do so when they have a problem. Their issues may or may not be indicative of the majority of users out there. There's no way of knowing.

Also, it appears to me that some if not many users post a problem, receive advice on how to handle it, then never return post to let the board know whether or not the problem was alleviated.

2. I've never run into DP handling anything badly -- only things I wish it could do which it cannot.

3. It is a bad idea to add a DAW to your arsenal if you don't need it or can't afford it.

That's all the crossgrade is? Not to downplay it as I'm hardly rich, but for $329 it's worth it just to have it... especially something as powerful as DP. Geez... there are PLUG-INS that cost more than that! Waves L3 for example, which I would love to have, but can't afford! :(

I agree with you there, Chris! I can usually spot posts where I'm certain that the issue is either user error or some sort of issue specific to the poster's Mac. Often times they'll reveal some sort of information later about some sort of weird, non-standard thing they're doing that would have made it easy to identify the reason for the problem.

In the past, I've attempted to put "RESOLVED" into subject headers of threads where someone posts a problem and then solves it, because pages of topics that read "DP isn't working for me!!!" give a bad impression, and if you were to read the topic, you might find a post by topic starter that reveals it was another issue and not DP's fault. Or as you said, they fix it and never return, or don't want to return and are embarassed to say "sorry, my mistake."

I'm amused by the posts where people say "DP is terrible... I start it and it crashes within 5 minutes every time! What a crappy program!" I wonder, do they honestly think that everybody's DP is doing this? There'd be riots! LOL And they don't want to here that it's an issue with THEIR system. And some issues are hard to trace. After reading about it for years, I finally had an experience with bad RAM. Fortunately, the RAM was SO BAD, it was easier to come to this conclusion than suffer instability for months before you figure it out. I had 2.5GB, and added 2 more GB and half the time the Mac would only show 3.5GB total. I tried re-seating the RAM, changing slots, finally took it back, got better RAM and no more problems. :-)

exactly James,

My intention was to pick it up mainly for my powerbook, so I can leave the idiotic Nuendo dongle in my main computer, Though I admit, I wanted to find an alternative to the Gestapo mentality,....
Steinberg as a company are the worst...
I haven't used and Nuendo since getting DP!

considering the Cubase 4 crossgrade cost me $350 from Nuendo, C4 being the worst investment I've made in a while, glad I was able to sell it.

I'm seriously thinking about just selling Nuendo as well.

Best-

So much info. cheers guys.
i spent most of yesterday researching DP, reading all the Sound on Sound reviews since version 3.0, and have to say that with the crossgrade option, i might just get a copy regardless of what happens to logic.

if apple decides to leave thousands of logic users hanging dry, i can have a back-up. but, it does look like a great program anyway.

thanks alot!!
