Help: workflow from Cubase (Win) to DP, Mac of course

Post by macguitarman »

Have colleagues on Windows XP, Cubase SX3 workflow.

They would prefer I setup an Win XP box and mirror their workflow, Cubase SX3, Reason, Stylus, and many VST VIs.

I am a pro audio-video and Apple IT guy, I have never had to rely on Windows.

This is a mess. I decided to do a Boot Camp, XPSP2 install. Cubase installs, but won't fully launch, hangs on MIDI initialization.

This after it took hours to get Windows to see the 828 MKII and had all the drivers. One issue after another, I have had it, I will not work one more second with the god forsaken, POS OS, Windows.

So, can't my colleagues simply do an OMF export and I can import OMF in DP 5, i know I will get MIDI files, audio files. They seem resistant to do OMF's.

How about VI's (VST's) and effect plugins with OMF?

The issue is they wan to re-import my changes, mix, etc, back into Cubase.

They want me to have the same exact environment as them for easier workflow.

But they are using so many VST VI's, EVP88, etc, and effect plug ins, don't know how one gets around that.

Any suggestions, my colleagues are adamant on staying on Windows, why?, take a guess why, free, cracked, typically unrelaible and screwed up, Win PC music software, a total mess.

Any suggestions, and oh yeah, using Windows, is not an option, I should have known better, I have never "had" to use Windows in my entire professional IT life, I am an Apple engineer by choice and trade, and will never do it, it is soulless and usually painful and devoid of any joy.

I think Thoreau said, "Beware of all enterprises that require new clothes"

Applied to technology, "Beware of any enterprise that requires MS Windows", Run like hell.

thanks

I have a somewhat similar situation in that my two bandmates are both Cubase users. One of them is new to Cubase, and he's been sending me track archives which I can then easily import into any Cubase project and see exactly what he sees, which has been very useful. I just now exported an OMF 2.0 file in Cubase, choosing the "all-in-one" option, and then tried to import this file in DP: no go. DP said the file contained media types it could not recognize. The files are AIF files which DP can easily import, so I don't understand this.

No matter: after importing that OMF back into a new project in Cubase, I can see that the OMF option is going to be useless for me, and will likely be useless for you as well. Only basic track information is exported: inserts, sends, group tracks are all left out.

If you're a licensed Cubase user, I think you may find the best option is to install the Mac version Cubase which will allow you to share projects, track archives, etc. Perhaps somebody else here will suggest a better idea. Sorry.

OMF's from Cubase have to consist of only Mono tracks in order for DP to import them. I think it's something to do with the fact that Cubase uses stereo interleaved (I still wish DP would sort out this issue though).

Go back and split all the stereo tracks into pairs of mono(grouped, panned hard left & right) and I'm pretty confident DP will import the OMF no problem.
