Lorenzo, I hate to ask and don't know how involved it is, but is there any chance you could export the data as a tab-delimited text file for import as a flatfile db into Filemaker for those of us who are sql-challenged?

hi, try first to download the zip file on my site, there is a text with all the info about the tables in the db. I think that a .sql file can be imported but if you prefere a simple tab limited text file of any of the table you're welcome I'll do as soon as I can. Rember that in the main "tips" table there are only the title, tip ID and the tips so authors and keywords are on separate tables. So maybe you'll need them too.
Let me know first if you can simply import the sql file available on my website, if not I'll upload the text files for each table.

@ Shooshie
I won't insert your tip with the disclaimer in the db untill bug will be fixed.

regards, Lorenzo

Well, I just spent the past two hours downloading, installing and attempting to run mysql, cocoamysql, and the DP tips database. Let's just say that this was one of my less successful encounters with UNIX. I did get MySQL running from the preference pane button. But nothing after that seemed to work. I could never figure out what to type into CocoaMySQL's "Host" field, or any of the other fields, for that matter. I assumed that I put my user name and password in their respective fields. But it wasn't going to have anything to do with me. No sir!

At some point, MySQL refused to run anymore. That was after some serious Terminal typing. Deleted /usr/bin/local/mysql, and reinstalled. Still no workee. Restarted. Still no workee.

I started to do it all one more time, and finally asked myself, "why are you doing this?" The answer was, "because it's there." That wasn't good enough. It's also there in TextEdit, where I wrote the tip sheet, and in Safari on Unicornation's site in this very thread. So I said heck with it and trashed all evidence of SQL (except Apple's original install).

I guess I won't be using the database, but I appreciate that there are people out there who actually CAN! :D

It would be greatly appreciated if you get a chance. You can't directly import an sql db into FileMaker without investing in a commercial third-party plug-in that <corporatespeak> "migrates" </corporatespeak> sql to FM.

I know I could take your sql db and with enough futzing around in BBEdit with grep I could manage to strip out everything but the raw data as a text file, but it would be major futzing, whereas I hoped a simple delimited export would be quick and easy.

Appreciate all your work put into it, and if it's not convenient to do I understand.

Well, if it keeps on growing we can always go to the "very friendly" FileMaker Pro. In the meantime here is another one:

One song, multiple mixes:

Before 4.6, if you had a mix, and wanted another one slightly different, you had to automate everything so that you could duplicate the mix and make the changes. After 4.6 there is no need to do automate anymore, unfortunately, if you want to make more radical changes between mixes, like adding or deleting tracks, or changing buss assignments, all the previous mixes will be affected as well.

So what I do is what I usually did for multiple mixes before 4.6: duplicate the chunk, and freely adjust the new mix. It is not the ideal solution, but it definitively works and saves time.

hi, when mysql is running (I'm using the whole mysql from terminal so I don't know about pref pane mysql start) you have to type 127.0.0.1 as Host and "root" as user. no password (users in mysql are different than your mac users) then you can find import under file menu... I'm not sure about the perl script, don't know if there is a native perl install within macosx (I think so) but the file must be have executable permission to run... or just must be run in terminal writing "perl dp.pl"
regards, Lorenzo
p.s. I know that these open source software aren't as simple as filemaker but since I know how to use them I won't buy software when I can use free solutions.
p.p.s the perl script to run needs some module (DBI and DBD available to download from cpan site)

I had the host correct, but I guess I was going wrong by using my own username. So it's got to be root, eh? Well, I may try it again. I'd have to download it all again. I was pretty serious when I threw it out!

But I may not have emptied it yet... ;)

hi, this afternoon I'll try to find a simple tutorial in internet to use mysql, it's not difficult but it needs a good tutorial (I've bought 2 books here in Italy but only for the language cos my english isn't very good and for technical studies it's good for me to read in italian)
here you can find ALL but it could seem difficult at first sight
http://dev.mysql.com/doc/mysql/en/
it worth a look and to bookmark it if you intend to use mysql
and here a simple getting start tutorial

Hey, thanks Lorenzo! The three main data csvs imported with zero problems, and I'll work out setting up the relationships in FMP and some kind of GUI when I have some time this evening. I might even can use the "*chain" files somehow but don't know how or if that would work.

I'll see how I can make it available for download somewhere once it's set up, maybe export it from FM in XML and several different formats, too.

chain table works to create more link from one table to another ... ie
one tip can be written then edited so in author you can find more than one name
this works in mysql with this query
select title, author from tips inner join authorchain on authorchain.tipid = tips.id inner join author on author.id = authorchain.authorid where ...

the same for cathegory: if you create more chain on a single tip (ie mix and edit cathegory) you must use a chain table.

p.s. sorry for this horrible explanation... it's difficult in italian, in english is simply impossible for me :-P

:D It's near impossible in any language!

I got it, though. That seems to be the same as can be done in FMP using table relationships. I'm just not sure how to use those "*chain" files for import into FileMaker Pro in any meaningful way that would create the relationships.

I can see how you had the chains (relationships) set up from those files, and I think I can duplicate the same thing in FMP. It lets you just drag links between fields in tables to set up the relationships. I'll just have to do it by hand because I don't think (but don't really know????) that the relationship/chain files are importable.

Hope that makes sense.

well I don't know how fmp works so I can't help you I try in this way:
TIPS: where tipid=1 tip=xyz
AUTHOR: where autid=1 name=Lorenzo; where autid=2 name=Contigoni
AUTHIRCHAIN: where tipid=1 autid=1; where tipid=1 (again) autid=2 (that refere to another author)

ok lets me explain: if Lorenzo and Contigoni have written and edited the same tip I use the authorchain table to tell my db that for tipid 1 (which is the id of the tip written by me and Contigoni) there are 2 authors.
If I had put the author in the main table (tips) I wouldn't have succeded in tell my db that there were more then 1 author. And if I had wrote 2 names in the same raw well this simply has no sense in a db...
hope to be clear now, this table seems more easy to understand than my english

I'm bumping the tips sheet up for reference purposes. Use it, folks! There are some great references in here. If it doesn't have what you want, ask for it. I keep it updated anytime I come across something that seems suited for it. If I miss your tip, PM it to me. I guarantee you I'll update it when I get your tip (well, maybe not that minute... but soon afterward).
