BASS (how low can U Go)?

Post by jon »

Hello,

Trouble when I mix-down regarding the bass or low end of the 2-track. I either nix it or it hollows all to loudly. The genera of music is pop/rock. Any thoughts or successful tips with experience mixed in?

I am listening to the new Beck album titled "Guero" and for example the low end or bass on the song "Earthquake Weather" is hauntingly delicious and I want to see if I can some how create that? I guess his engineers are using a Manley Slam with a Crane Song IBIS or are they using Pro Tools and plugs? Either way just pleasant to the ear.

:-)

From my experience getting the proper low end has a lot to do with mixing in an acoustically neutral room with accurate monitors.....and lots of experience. It has less to do with magical plugins or outboard, but with these things and the prior mentioned setup/experience it's all good.

I do a lot of extremely low end stuff and have never had an issue with DP---the sound is incredible. I also use a ps 110 tannoy sub though....my recordings are clean and the mix and masters are too - maybe there is an issue with one of these facets....

I've successfully played back tracks @ 1 Hz, so if you are having low-end issues, it is not DP.

Since you mentioned a drop out, this sounds a lot like a phase cancellation problem. Is your bass stereo? Did you process both L&R identically? Did you accendentally nudge one of the bass tracks?

The cancellation could also be in your room. If you have not measured your room, or thought about it, there is almost no chance that it is anywhere near neutral. In fact, it probably has huge suck outs, unless the room is very large and you are not too close to a wall.

Subwoofers, carefully placed, can help, as well as bass traps. I've had a lot of luck with realtraps, and auralex lenrds.
