routing Apple software synth
Today's lesson: I can assign the built-in Apple synth to a MIDI track and hear it, but have been unable to assign the audio to a track input so I can record it. What do I need to do to make it work?

Thanks for the lead. I did the Soundflower download / install / setup per the instructions, but I'm left with the same situation I have with the built-in synth: I get an audio output, but cannot route it to an audio track. Specifically, the "Input Stream #1 1-2" does not appear in my list of available inputs.
What am I missing here?

I think you may have to make Soundflower an agregate device with your PCI 424. I never succeeded getting it working but didn't spend much time on it. It would be nice to access those instruments.

Sometrimes it's nice to get JACKed around...

Got it working, by uninstalling Soundflower and installing JACK (the download is at www.jackosx.com . Officially it's a pre-release (current version is 0.74), but it configured first thing running. There are a few setup steps involved, but the documentation is excellent by any standards, and astonishing for open source. (BTW, I'm using Presonus Firebox as my interfrace, and aggregation didn't seem to be required.) Once I added enough inputs in the Studio Bundle to see the Jack inputs, I was ready to go.
That being said, I'm rather disappointed (but not surprised) that all of the software instrument tracks in GB are mono. It looks like NI's Bandstand is going to be next on my buy list.

Thanks Mark, very good to know. I'll give Jack a try as I have never been able to get Soundflower working. Didn't know about mono instr's in GB. Plenty of good stuff out there like NI. I've been thinking of getting Komplete 4. Best of luck in your musical endeavors.

Most welcome.
I've had good results with NI instruments in my Sonar rig (Pro-53, FM7 and Kompakt with a great Steinway piano sample set). I expect Bandstand will be up to their usual high standards. At this point I'm getting a good piano sound from Dimension Pro, but I will probably get another sample player for the Steinway - I just like it too much.
At least new instruments are only $200-400 a pop nowadays, instead of $2000-4000 like they used to be... <g>
