Toast with Jam users: quick question...
Hi there.
I came to the conclusion that I need Jam, pronto. But, what I don't get is:
They sell Toast and Jam as a package. But the version that comes with that package is Toast 6. What I don't get is that they also sell Toast version 8 by itself. If I get the Jam and Toast, can I upgrade to toast 8 and still use Jam, or I can only use Jam if I have toast 6? The way I understand it is that they are different apps bundled into a package, right?
What does Toast 8 do that Toast 6 doesn't?
It reads on the web page that they perform as expected on intel macs. Is that your experience?
Thank you all.

I hope you get some answers to this too - I used to use Jam in OS9, and now I use Toast, which is quick and easy (I love v. 6, but v.7 has some coolness, I guess...) But my solo CD's were set up to be mastered from Jam in OS9, and that program gave a lot of control over track beginning times and cross fades, and levels, which Toast doesn't offer. . . But since I went to OSX, I've been using Toast and iTunes on occasion, but Toast as the "go to" app. As far as Toast v. 8, I'm not familiar with it, but maybe you and I should split Toast and Jam, you take the Toast, (I'll keep my v.6) and I'll take the Jam. If that's legal, of course.

Jam hasn't been updated in a while, so yes, you use Jam 6 with whatever the newest toast is. they are independent. Works fine on my 1.83 intel mini....

I'm glad to hear it works in OSX. It seems they are in NO hurry to officially support intel macs, though. It's supposed to do much more than just crossfading between tracks, isn't it?HCMarkus wrote:I use Jam, and there is no indication it is simpy overlaying the Toast engine, but one never knows... Jam works fine in OSX, but unless you want to do crossfades from song to song on a CD, I am unsure if you need it anymore.
If it's legal I suppose we could do that, but I belive it is not...tommymandel wrote:I'm not familiar with it, but maybe you and I should split Toast and Jam, you take the Toast, (I'll keep my v.6) and I'll take the Jam. If that's legal, of course.

Anyone else want to chip in? I could certainly use your info/recommendations before I get it.
Is Jam still a must-have app? Or should I just get Toast 8?
Can I use Jam 6 with Toast 8 eventhough they sell Jam with toast 6? (upgrading to Toast 8 from toast 6)
Thank you all

Jam 6 is a stand alone app and doesn't give a hoot about Toast be it 6,7 or 8.
It doesn't run "with" Toast any more than it runs with or without any other application.
There was a brief period of time in the long ago early OS9 to OS X transition that the two apps were interdependent but the world moved on, times changed and even cars look different now............
Toast is a great app for burning Data CD/DVD stuff and making simple audio CDs.
Jam is for burning Red Book compliant Audio CDs and has lot's of options for that that Toast doesn't offer.
Either will work depending on your needs.
Personally I couldn't get by without the features Jam has but I know some people that get by fine using Toast for audio as well as data burns.

I use Jam6/Toast 6 Titanium.
Toast - data - you can burn a basic audio cd as well
Jam - Red Book Audio and CD layout - crossfades, track levels, ISRC codes, dithering, CD-Text
Unless Toast has suddenly acquired full Red Book specs, Jam is the one you need for an audio CD master.
Roxio advertises all these extra Photo CD and Video CD capabilities for Toast, but they sound pretty consumer-oriented. I haven't used any of them. I only use it for CD and DVD backups.

...and I just looked into DSP Quattro today.
It looks like a combination of Peak LE/Audacity and Waveburner.
It can use AU or VST effects on a track-by-track basis - way better than what you can do with Toast/Jam.
http://www.i3net.it/Products/dspQuattro ... anguage=EN
...and it's the same or cheaper than Toast/Jam. You can always burn data CDs and DVDs with iTunes.
Quite frankly, I don't see a lot of need for Toast these days - unless you're into Photo CDs or Video CDs, but I'm still interested in an application that can do full Red Book audio better than Jam for less than the cost of Peak Pro. Maybe DSP-Quattro is that app?

Toast 7 (and 8 ) do allow you to create self-extracting back-ups that span multiple discs, which has been great for archiving projects with any large amount of audio files. This was the main reason I upgraded to 7 from 6 (I wasn't aware until I read this thread that 8 was even available). Again, Jam works fine with 7, and it would seem foolish to me for them to release an incompatible 8 without updating Jam.
Looks like 8 does require OSX 10.4.8, while I'm running 7 on Panther (10.3.9).

It's good to hear that. I am about to get BIAS Peak pro, so maybe I won't need T/J anymore. I'll check BIAS' page carefully to make sure it can indeed substitute T/J (plus all the other obvious advantages).msmith92 wrote:i got a copy of jam with bias peak. and well, bias peak does sorta the same thing as jam anyway and more..might be another option.

I use DSP-Quattro for all my CD mastering. It does everything that you would ever need to do to create a CD master image/file. Plus it does the burning right from the playlist window without the need for toast or a similar app.lwilliam wrote:...and I just looked into DSP Quattro today.

For $150 you really can't go wrong. Plus you get a good 2-track editor that also can load & edit samples and control VIs and some other cool stuff. And to top it all off the Sample Rate Conversion algorithm is one of the best (beats DP hands down).
I highly endorse DSP-Quattro.

No problem. peak is a really good waveform editor and easy to use and since it comes with jam you have the option of doing your track layout in either.FMiguelez wrote:It's good to hear that. Just looked at the Roxio Site. It looks like Toast 8 has most of Jam's attributes. It'll do level adjustment and cross fades. Plus, you can insert audio units fx. Can't tell by the description if it does ALL of what Jam does (PQ, redbook, etc.) but if you're not doing your own masters for purposes of mass duplication it seems like a no brainer to go with 8. Does anyone have it and can comment on any of the other audio disk features?
