Does a quality universal au distortion/overdrive plug exist?

Post by digidan »

I am looking for a plug that can emulate overdrive, saturation, distortion, etc... and I'm coming up short. I have found camel phat, but nothing else. Anyone mind telling me what you use, and or like?

I want to be able to create the overdriven tube mic sound on vocal tracks and maybe add bite to percussion tracks or even fuzz up a bass guitar line.

A plug that can do destructive digital dither, down sampling, bit crushing, (not sure what it's called) for really knarled up sounds would be nice as well.

***must be mac pro universal binary (intel) compatible.***

Another vote for Izotope Trash. I tried the demo and liked it a lot.
You might want to also consider one of the guitar amp modelers, like Guitar Rig, Amplitube or Gearbox. You'll get a lot more effects and coloring than distortion with those, too.
DUY's Valve plugin adds very nice saturation and overdrive, though I find it works best as a mixing tool to add some analog flavor, like Vintage Warmer.
Nomad Factory BlueTubes plugins are available with a fully functioning, time-limited demo.

I'd say iZotope Trash as well. While I do not use it, I have, and was very impressed.

Since I use a UAD-1e card, I tend to use Nigel when I need some of that. I use an outboard PodXT for all other needs. Line6 now has a plugin version of the Pod, I think it might be called gearbox, but I don't know if it is UB.

More guitar oriented, I believe there is Guitar Rig 2 from NI that is UB, and Amplitube I believe. I've really not done a lot of research down that avenue. I've been so happy with the Pod I've not looked elsewhere (and Nigel).

Another vote for Trash. Plus, it has a great analog delay that I use a lot on various sources.

Try and see if you like Warp Drive by Andrew Garber. It is simple, 2 controlls (saturation and output gain), but I think it is quite nice and it is freeware. http://www.cs.camosun.bc.ca/~c0262447/software/

I have used the MOTU pre-amp plug-in within DP 5.11. (It's the one with the red skin on it.) I have been pretty happy with the results when it comes to distortion and such. I was not sure if you had tried this yet or not.

Hehe, no I found the download link but nothing to say it was universal. I did however download it and do see that it is infact a universal as you say. I will test it out tonight! :)
